Noisy fuel pump
I rebuilt my td5 engine and when I first cranked it over the fuel connection on the fuel cooler was loose and pumped diesel all over the alternator, needless to say a few days later I had to fit a new alternator. When I did this I didn't want to loose all the de-ionised water and coolant I'd just put in it and I had a spare inlet manifold gasket so I took the fuel cooler and inlet manifold off to get to it. The next day when I was driving it I noticed that the pump was very noisy and it's very loud it the engine bay too. Could I have disturbed something whilst changing the alternator or do you think it's coincidence and the pump has failed? I had new genuine injector washers put on 3000 miles ago with an AMC head so I'm guessing it's not them. Thanks, Jim.

I would start with a purge cycle. Turn the ignition to the second position and pump the accelerator pedal five times. The engine light on the dash will start flashing and the pump will make all sorts of noises. Let it do its thing for a few minutes. Hopefully the pump is noisy purely because you have introduced air into the system. Charlie

I meant to say I've done the full purge cycle a good few times

Did you solve this in the end?

Mine has just started to go a bit noisy.... air purge'd a few times without much success.

Have filled with a millers additive just incase it was poor diesel, hoping to solve the issue... Likely will change fuel filter and perhaps air bleed valve at the next service upcoming.

Is the noise a constant whir or a gurgling like air is being purged from the system?

Former is likely an ageing pump, latter could be the same, but might also indicate air getting into the system through the FPR, fuel filter housing ports or somewhere else.

It's more of a constant whir and very audible.

If we are at a fuel pump ageing, at what point does it begin to become obvious closer to failure (obviously still driving it)?

I've noticed the fuel gauge has also misbehaved too. It was initially reading full as it was full, then after a 60 miles motorway run decreased normally. However following day started up, the gauge rose very slowly to about half....Upon refilling it only took approx 8 litres before being full and gauge reads full again Confused

Can fuel pump / fuel gauge issues all be linked?

I've just done the pump today and my problem was definitely that. New Siemens pump seems to have fixed it

Unfortunately I had to go through the fuel pump replacement. Being a bit of a novice on Defenders but generally will tackle most jobs, I decided to give it a go. As it’s a complete Censored to get to, I opted to cut a hole in the rear floor and install a port hole hatch in case it ever needs doing again. If anyone is interested, I followed this video and the dimensions were bang on.

I used a Dremel and just took my time, all in all it took about an hour to cut the hatch, about 30 mins to tidy up the cross members and another 30 to give it all a good clean up.

Installing the new pump took about 30 minutes and I opted to change the fuel filter at the same time.

Good plan and it’s on my to do list - I’ve purchased the marine hatch and I have the Dremel - just need a bit of motivation - and by that I don’t mean the pump failing Rolling with laughter

Well that’s one less thing on my long to do list…

Please note - all I did was fit the hatch - not replace the pump 👍

Added bonus is that due to the number of layers of flooring/insulation/carpet/vinyl in the back, you can’t actually feel the hatch under your feet 👍
