Transfer box exchange is fairly straight forward - unitil I got to that bit - I was thinking U joint bearings had gone. Might still be worth a look.

After numerous visits to Defender "fundis" eventualy located problem - fly wheel. Apparently the TD5 Defenders have a fly-wheel which absorbes power from clutch to final drive train. Almost like a second clutch. This thing was completely worn and explained the vibration on pull-off.

I have the same to do to my 90 (flywheel and clutch) Judders when pulling away worse when towing. Mine has only covered 34,000 miles.
