Emissions Failure MOT

Hi

Having owned my 2003 defender for a couple of months it went in for its mot and has failed on emissions.

I tried the additive new filters and drive hard pre retest but no joy.

Tester believes it’s due to the remap as under full throttle it’s gives a heavy Black puff possibly indicating over fuelling.

My thoughts are get a Nanocom and map the ecu back to standard, is this easily done and am I likely to see an improvement ?.

The symptoms could also be worn injectors will a Nanocom help to identify this ?

Any recommendations in the Herts/Beds area who may be able to diagnose or help with the map should I not bother trying to resolve myself.

All help and advice greatfully received.

Check that the MAF isn't faulty. That caused mine to smoke more than usual when it was faulty.

Tested the Maf with a voltmeter and readings appeared right also cleaned the Map

Is it a genuine maf? As in Siemens vdo? I found the best way to clean injectors is to take them out, and change the washers and seals. I use millers eco max every fill, and was still surprised how much crud was on the nozzles. Cleaning them and refitting made a noticeable difference.
A lot of the remaps are just increased fuelling…. If you know who the tuner is try contacting them. They might sort for a small fee, or get it remapped by a reputable company. Unfortunately there’s alot of people who request rolling coal and popcorn limiters

Depending who mapped your TD5, some tuners disable the MAF. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Change who does your MOTs. My tester doesn’t even poke the pipe in. 😂😂

I agree with much of what has been said.

My only thoughts are that as your Defender failed and it is recorded on the system, then the ‘new’ MOT Testing Station will probably be obliged to look more closely than it otherwise might?

In any case, I hope for a positive outcome 👍

I've never actually known a tester to look at the database before conducting the test, although it is likely that they'll see the failure report when they enter the result of the test.

on someone parade... but when you have your mapping changed I doubt any of these tuners will necessary make sure or can guarantee the engine still passes the emissions requirements. Same with all the decatting business.

In the USA it's obviously a popular thing to do with zero consideration for emissions and a bunch of business and u-tubers have received letters from the EPA threatening with fines.

Interesting. In my experience they look at previous advisories etc. in advance.

Having said that, I am one of the group that has a pragmatic and reasonable MOT Tester who actually understands and has an interest in Land Rovers.

I hope the OP’s story ends well 👍

I would take it elsewhere. The smoke test should not involve full throttle!!!!

I guess it depends on the tester. If you were presenting it for a retest I would certainly expect them to.

Retest is very different. You get a set time period and they should only be retesting those items.

If presented for a brand new test, then the tester should be looking at it with fresh eyes and not pre-judging it.
