If you're going to be around the Loch Lomond area for a day or 2, then a short distance away is the Queen Elizabeth Forest and just north of Aberfoyle there is a track through the forest called the Three Lochs Drive. This is a 14km hard road completely away from everybody, it can be driven by any car so not taxing at all but the views are unbelievable. When we went there a couple of years ago, we got there about 5.30 in the afternoon, dropped a donation in the box at the start of the drive and pretty much had the place to ourselves. We only saw 2 other cars and they were fishermen parked up
 We only left from there at 10pm because the kids were wanting to get back to the tin tent to go to sleep

Jus the sort of thread I need.
We're off to Scotland in July. Going right to the top and back down agian. Planning's in the very early stages so far, but the Isle of Sky is on the cards for us as well. We would like to get up there again soon, when do the midges come out? We went in August during the school holidays, took 3 weeks with a little van, up the west coast and down the east coast with diversions inside and we didn't have any midge problems
 We are tied to the school holidays as my wife is a Teacher so if this is midge time we must have been lucky last time and will be in for a few bites next time  |

Best time of year to visit!
One thing that is a must is driving through glencoe, the scenery is so magnificent and dramatic. Otherwise if you have the time I would seriously recommend getting a boat to Harris/Lewis for a day or 2 (the boat leaves from Uig in Skye and taking the car is about 90 I think. Absolutely worth it tho the scerey is so different, spectacular to drive on it looks almost lunar, and there is some fantastic beaches too. I am thinking of going to Scotland next month for 4 days with the 9 year old.
Any help much appreciated looking for wild country !! and amazing driving routes Anybody know if there are any proper log cabins to rent anywhere (not a garden shed ) We will arrive in Cairnryan by ferry and head from there |

Haven't read the whole thread yet, but will do. Current plan is to do a 'tour' of Scotland to get to grips with our Howling Moon roof tent. Probably looking at one night stopovers.
Just want to try and avoid the midges otherwise it'll be, in the immortal words of one Eric Cartman "screw you guys, I'm going home!'   |

As far as midges go and their habitat...... the West of Scotland
Get yourself some Avon skin so soft moisturising spray and liberally coat open skin with it as the midges hate it and you will be fine |

Zag - best time is from late April to mid-June, after that the midgies become intolerable in certain areas of the West coast. Worst time for the little blighters is after a damp but warm spell (usually mid-June to end August), when there's no wind (they can't fly fast...you can usually out-walk them, so a gentle breeze keeps them at bay). From mid-April the days are long and bright....after the spring clock-change, Scotland starts getting more light than England...to the point where on 21st June it never really goes dark at all in the far North. But of course, not everyone is bothered by the midges. I get a small red blotch which only lasts a couple of yours. whereas MrsK really suffers! I've been in Glen Brittle when theyve been out in such large numbers that they;re up your nose, in your ears, and all over the food you eat

We've just read this thread again and it seems the Scottish tourist board could do with a midge cull
Seems a hell of a shame that the midges are putting us off going, with the time we have available  |
