LT230 road speed transducer Miles v KM

Hello,

Tried to search first but could not find. I am removing a good LT230 transferbox from a UK (Miles odometer) and installing it in a ROW (KM odometer) Defender. Both are 110 Td5 cars with a transfer ratio of 1:1.4.

Does anyone know if the pulse generated by the reluctor wheel and transducer are the same for Miles and KM cars and the difference is just how the Odometer displays this? I recall on the old mechanical drive Series there are different ratios for the speedo cable.

I was hoping to just change the input seal, fit and then change the oil without opening it as I know the transfer box is good.

I am almost 100% positive the LT230 sensor is the same for mile and km with the conversion being done in-gauge or ECU. Seem to recall that the signal goes to the gauge first then to the ECU.

Fit and test against a GPS would be your easiest route.

The transfer box transducer will be the same regardless of odometers reading miles or km.

So no need to source or fit a new speedo drive into the transfer box if all you want to do is change the speedo head to a metric one.

The transducer provides a pulse to the speedo (4100 pulses per mile of memory serves me) which it converts to a speed reading. The speedo then doubles this pulse rate and sends it to the ECU so the ECU can do all sorts of clever speed:engine RPM related maths.

All use the same transducer, only variation is the drive gear for different tyre sizes
