DPF advice please!
So, next week l have to decide whether to go ahead and take delivery of my new Defender 90 D250 Commercial

l have one concern and am hoping someone can answer it. Have you driven a Defender D200/D250/D300 on local journeys without any motorway use or longer journeys, and have you had any issues with the DPF?

l was looking at the VW Transporter Van a couple of years ago, and some owners had issues with DPF clogging or even failing when the van was used primarily for local journeys.

As a business vehicle that's what my Defender will be used for most of the time. l don't want to find its an issue after l take delivery!

I’m a low mileage user, mainly because I can walk to work, but I’ve never had an issue with DPFs on any LR I’ve had, though I do make sure I give it a good run at least twice a month. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Don’t forget that this was the first modern LR that they were able design the DPF in the optimum position unlike the previous models where it was an after thought squeezed in where it could fit.
My D240 has now done 18500 miles of mostly fast A road and off-road driving and no issues at all and also I went 11000 miles in the first year with only 2litres added to the rank, since then it got topped up at the 11000 mikes oil cgange I had done and in year 2 I still had 1500 miles Adblu Range left when the car went for its first scheduled service at 16000 miles and it was topped up again as part of the service. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

My D200 is mainly driven on country/rural roads and doesn't see a motorway very often, it also does a lot of short local journeys and I'm a year in with 9000 miles on the clock and haven't had any problems with the DPF so far Thumbs Up Cheers Ian

Well that's good to hear, a friend has an Evoque and it's had endless DPF issues, the dealer keeps changing the engine oil FOC because it gets contaminated with diesel

The evoque has always had a problem with the dpf but the same engine in other JLR vehicles was ok. This was due to the body / engine location which meant they had to change the location of the dpf and it didn’t get hot enough, other JLR vehicles don’t have a problem. You should make sure that it give the car a good blast down the motorway at least every tank full of fuel. This applies to all diesels. My last car was a Volvo and it stated in the manual to do this 110 XS 250 MY 23 Gondwana Stone, Cold climate pack and towbar

Prior to my Defender I had an L405 Range Rover and it had the problem of oil dilution and frequent expensive oil changes. I was glad to get rid of it.

All of the above user descriptions should be fine with a DPF as they are all doing over 5k per year and even the short distance user is doing two long runs a month which should allow a DPF regen.

Can you provide an example of your typical usage and expected annual mileage? Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

Well, l've now had the Defender 90 D250 for ten months and done 7,800 miles.

I've had many days of short local journeys. Although the engine is usually still at operating temperature when l get back in the vehicle after visiting a customer. (average time 30-60 minutes)

It does get the odd longer run. l've had no DPF issues at all.

I can tell when the the DPF is regenerating because the idle speed is higher. l try not to shut down the vehicle when this is happening but if l arrive at my destination l can't sit there waiting for it to finish. So it does sometimes get shut down before the regeneration is complete.

l don't deliberately take longer journeys, or drive any faster. l just use the vehicle. Average MPG is around 28.

lt seems the DPF installation is working fine. lt started with around 8,000 miles adblue range but after 7,800 miles it's still claiming l have 6,800 miles before top up is needed.

I would agree with all of the above - DPF is not an issue with the Defender because it was designed in from the start. I came to the Defender after a couple of Land Rover Discovery Sports and became obsessed with DPF and fuel dilution issues, but as I have said on other posts regarding oil changes etc, I am old school and change the oil / filter ridiculously frequently - 1000 miles from new and then circa 8-10,000 thereafter. I really do not believe in these 20,000 mile + service schedules. After all, the cost of an oil change versus the longevity of a £75,000 vehicle is small change. I will also confess to regular oil analysis (Millers) as well - again because of the historic LRD Sport issues - and so far the Defender has "passed" each time for fuel dilution and soot percentages. The first analysis was weirdly high in molybdenum which was put down to assembly lubricants after discussion with the Millers chemist. MY 21 3.0 D250 SE 90 Hakuba Silver (Sold October 2023)

As above.

First oil change was at 5,000 then next one will be at 10,000 and 10,000 intervals after that.

The discussion about whether this is necessary is long, and there are arguments on both sides. But it can't do any harm to change the oil more frequently.

Lightening, agree with you that more frequent oil changes can only be a good thing. After an initial change from new at 2,500 miles, I have done them every 7,000 thereafter.

I've also done the the rear diff and transfer case at 30,000 miles ( as per the arduous service schedule ).

Now at 50,000 miles I'm about to do the ZF transmission, having ordered the kit today. L663 D300 SE MY22.
