TD5 Non runner
Hi all,

I hope someone might be able to help me with my ‘99 TD5… Crying or Very sad

While away camping in the summer, we were driving along on a day out and the engine started to play up, with a slight hesitation, and stuttering. I gave it a blast up the road and it seemed to clear it. Then the next day it did it again, only a bit worse, and would stall when pulling away. This then developed into hardly running at all, like only running on 4 of 5 cylinders, resulting in us having to be ‘recovered’ by the AA back home.

Since then it has deteriorated even more to where it is now, where it won’t start at all.


These were the fault codes on my Nanocom:

(4,1) INLET AIR TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT, (LOGGED HIGH).
---
(10,1) AIR CONDITIONING FAN DRIVE OPEN LOAD, (LOGGED).
---
(10,3) TACHOMETER DRIVE OPEN LOAD, (CURRENT).
---
(10,4) GEARBOX / ABS DRIVE OPEN LOAD, (LOGGED).
---
(10,5) AIR CONDITIONING CLUTCH DRIVE OPEN LOA D, (LOGGED).
---
(14,1) AIR CONDITIONING FAN DRIVE OPEN LOAD, (CURRENT).
---
(14,3) TACHOMETER DRIVE OPEN LOAD, (CURRENT).
---
(14,4) GEARBOX / ABS DRIVE OPEN LOAD, (CURRENT).
---
(14,5) AIR CONDITIONING CLUTCH DRIVE OPEN LOAD, (CURRENT).
---
(25,8 ) INJECTOR TRIM DATA CORRUPTED, (CURRENT).
---
(28,1) INJECTOR 1 PEAK CHARGE SHORT, (LOGGED).
---
(28,2) INJECTOR 2 PEAK CHARGE SHORT, (LOGGED).
---
(28,3) INJECTOR 3 PEAK CHARGE SHORT, (LOGGED).
---
(28,4) INJECTOR 4 PEAK CHARGE SHORT, (LOGGED).
---
(28, 5) INJECTOR 5 PEAK CHARGE SHORT, (LOGGED).


Some of these won’t be relevant, as my Landy has no EGR or AC fitted.

With the Nanocom I am able to test all of the injectors and they all ‘click’ when tested, and I have full comms. with the ecu.

I have checked the following:

Injector loom. No oil in Red plug or the plug on the engine. Also checked the continuity of the loom between the connector on the fuel injector to the ECU Red plug, and all good. New injector loom fitted just in case.

I have visibly checked all the wiring between the ECU and the engine and can see no damage anywhere.

I’ve replaced the CPS with a new one, made no difference, and I’m getting an RPM reading when cranking.

The battery was replaced just before our trip.

I suspected the ECU was on its way out so I sent it off for test / repair, and when tested was found to have no faults. When I tried starting the vehicle after the ECU was returned, I had the following new faults logged:


(27,7) TOPSIDE SWITCH FAILED POST INJECTION, (LOGGED).

(29,7) TOPSIDE SWITCH FAILED POST INJECTION, (CURRENT).
---
(31,1) INJECTOR 1 OPEN CIRCUIT DETECTED, (LOGGED).
---
(31,2) INJECTOR 2 OPEN CIRCUIT DETECTED, (LOGGED).
---
(31,3) INJECTOR 3 OPEN CIRCUIT DETECTED, (LOGGED).
---
(31,4) INJECTOR 4 OPEN CIRCUIT DETECTED, (LOGGED).
---
(31,5) INJECTOR 5 OPEN CIRCUIT DETECTED, (LOGGED).


The fuel pump sounds pretty normal (it’s always been quite noisy since I have owned the vehicle), and I did replace the fuel filter as I had a new one on the shelf (and re-bleed). I also removed the fuel temperature sensor on the FPR, and briefly turned on the ignition to see if fuel was getting through. Fuel squirted out, but it didn’t really seem like 4 bar but, would a fuel supply issue cause all of these fuel injector faults to show??

So now, I’m completely stumped, and would really appreciate it if anyone has any ideas. Thumbs Up

Before you get too worried, go around and clean up all the earth points around the vehicle and make sure that is not the problem. You know how bad earths can upset electricals....

If that does nothing to help then the logging of topside faults is a good sign you need to find another eco. Perhaps it is an opportunity to upgrade to an NNN ecu as you should have an earlier MSB if original.

I forgot to mention I have connected the ECU earth directly to the battery Thumbs Up

The ECU is the NNN type so I guess it’s been replaced at some point Very Happy '99 TD5 Defender 90

Try another ECU. For basic test any TD5 ECU is ussable.
Are you sure, you have not get any watter into the ECU? "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I’ve been struggling to find one for a reasonable price, that’s why I thought I’d get mine repaired, but then they told me they tested it and it was ok Question '99 TD5 Defender 90

Think this maybe the lArge capacitors in the ecu these are the usual culprits for a top switch error being generated sorry

Try to borrow any TD5 engine ECU, just for testing if engine runs. From Defender or Disco2 - any can run the engine for test. You need just learn the securitity code with Nanocom.
Top switch fail and others - possible internal ECU fault, but not 100%, I have seen this also, when there was bad connection between ECU and injectors. And faulty capacitors are possible, but not 100% reason for this fault.
Injector open circuit fault is missing connection between ECU and injector. Look fot this first - check connectors, clean them and try to bend the internal pins on the female connectors a bit to make the a bit more tight. No need to replace them firts. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Topside Switch Failure usually means the ECU is dead, I’m afraid. It doesn’t need oil inside to die either.

As others have suggested, trying another ECU in the vehicle should be your next port of call. Charlie

The only reliable way to test the ECU is using it in car for at least one hour, to let the ECU heat up. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

A topside fault is a good indicator that the ecu is poorly.

Can you clear the codes and see if it comes back when trying to re start ?

Yes, the fault codes come back after clearing Thumbs Up

I’ve managed to find another ECU for a reasonable amount, plugged it in and the engine fired first time, happy days Very Happy

I’m going to keep this as a spare and get my original one repaired, as it’s the more desirable reprogrammable type. If anyone has any recommendations, I would appreciate it.

It just goes to show, if you send your ECU away for testing and it comes back as working, it may still be knackered Shocked '99 TD5 Defender 90
