MAF overvoltage fault
I’m getting an intermittent fault of MAF over voltage, which I think means that air flow is too high. Engine light comes on and it goes into limp mode. If i turn ignition on and off again, the light stays on but it isn’t in limp mode any longer.

I’ve cleaned the MAF and MAP sensors but no progress. Intercooler hoses have been checked and are fine. Is the next step to replace the MAF sensor or is there anything else I should look at?

Should add, had the code reset last night and did about 30 miles with no issues. This morning it came on after roughly 5 mins of driving, exactly same as yesterday. However, this time it stayed in limp mode after turning off/on again.

What condition are the wires connecting to the MAF in? 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

They look good. No obvious breaks or damage. If they were damaged it expect under voltage wouldn’t I?

They could short and spike voltage I guess, if they were broken/touching. 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

I’ve looked in the workshop manual for that fault code and it says either check the wiring or replace the sensor. Any idea which of the connector pins are the power connector?

Just by way of update, I changed the MAF sensor today. Mil light is still on, but it drove fine. Did about 17 miles of varying speed and didn’t hit limp mode, felt normal. Does it take a while for faults to self reset?

The test will be tomorrow morning. The last two days the light has been off in the morning then come on and gone into limp mode at exactly the same place/distance from home.

Hi

Also check the intercooler and it’s hoses for leaks or splits as
That’s one of the faults you can get if your getting a fault code P0101-17

Thanks. Checked those and all good. They would give an under vintage fault do to the reduced flow/presume, it an over vintage fault. At least that’s what the Indy said!

I had this fault code
P0101-17 (AE) Mass or volume air flow
circuit range/performance - General
electrical failure - circuit voltage above
threshold.
Turned out I had split the intercooler in three places!

Well that’s good news!!!

Just started her back up and the fault light has gone out, so fingers crossed that it’s just the sensor and not the intercooler!!

Well, after a week the light came back on. Was convinced I could hear air escaping and assumed an intercooler hose even though they are all silicon. Turns out you were right: intercooler split. Censored !

Looking at the IC while standing in front of your defender I bet the split was at the crimp seam on at the bottom left hand side of the IC

Although expensive, when my intercooler split, as they all seem to do, I went for the BAS one, not that I needed it for performance reasons, but because it’s so well made it will last the vehicle lifetime.
As per the topic where we discussed fitting the dreaded silicon elbow pipe [url] https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic81674...oler[/url] the intercooler fitting was relatively easy in comparison.

With aircon it’s a bit of a tight fit to remove old and fit new and may require the main coolant radiator to be lifted off its mountings and shifted forward a little to provide some wiggle room.

I don’t know if it’s a placebo effect, or that the engine was impacted by a tiny IC split before it grew and threw a fault code (DTC). But since fitting the BAS IC and all 3 BAS silicon hoses the engine seems to rev, run and pull far better. I’m now contemplating a sealed intake, Nuggetstuff air box and a BAS 170 remap to make full use of the new IC and hoses !!!!!!
