Rear Main Seal Leaking After New Clutch
Our local garage put a new clutch in our 2012 2.2 Defender a few weeks ago. While they were in there, they changed the crankshaft bearing rear main seal, which is a good thing to do.

Before they changed the rear main seal, there were no oil leaks. Now there is engine oil dripping from the hole in the bell housing, leaving spots on the ground. The leak is quite bad and needs attending to.

The garage said they used genuine Landrover parts, and tightened up the rear main seal properly. Is there anything they could have done wrong ?

Looks like we will have to pay for them to go back in and do it again, another days labour.

Anyone know or can guess what went wrong, from experience ?

Thanks in advance Puma 90 XS Station Wagon in Keswick Green 2012 2.2 Tdci

i’m in the same situation having had the main seal changed twice now and going in for the 3rd time next month. Big Cry

The mechanics are independent so not familiar with all the little idiosyncrasies of landrover power units.
However, after doing a search on here and finding the information I have now given the mechanics instructions where to put sealant, and am now more confident that the (next) replacement seal will be oil tight. (touch wood, black cat and crossing toes and fingers!)

This forum is a gold mine of information and this issue is common to puma’s after clutch changes.

I felt your pain Col... after my 19J had to come out again due to lack of sealant... well I hope, as I have not tested it since. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks very much for posting that, that link is excellent.

We will go back to our garage and say we are not prepared to pay for our RMS leak to be repaired unless

a) he uses the instructions in the workshop manual
b) the leak stops.

Only one thing, the workshop manual pages in the link relate to the 2.4 Puma, ours is a 2.2. I want to take the actual instructions for our vehicle to him, does anyone have the instructions for replacing a 2.2 Puma rear main seal they could photograph and put up please ?

Thanks to everyone who has posted. Puma 90 XS Station Wagon in Keswick Green 2012 2.2 Tdci
