Teflon Tape on diff plugs
Have seen some folks do this, putting Teflon tape on the threads of the drain and fill plugs. Is this common or unnecessary?

The plugs are tapered so should not need ptfe tape, plus you don’t want bits of the tape coming off and getting in the diff, especially on removal. If you do feel the need for sealant then loctite 248 in a gel stick or hylomar blue works well. If removing diff plugs think of replacing both fill and drain with magnetic ones. They are not expensive and if you look at pics on line of them they seem to have a loctite 248 like thread sealant on them. I.e https://gwynlewis4x4.co.uk/product/magneti...ve-gl1160/

Awesome that’s a great idea. Always curious what bits are coming off the gears especially with the ARB air lockers!

I use tape on the plugs, though not sure if this is right or wrong. I know the plugs are a taper fit, so shouldn't need it, but I do it more as an antiseize than anything else.

I haven't really thought about the tape getting in the diff, but I do try to keep it away from the end. Ptfe tape is so soft I can't see it damaging gears, however if there are any oil ways then I suppose it could interfere with those if there was enough in it.

I have fitted the magnetic plugs but I can't comment on how good they are as I have not done a fluid change since fitting.

coming from the water industry i tend to use a sealing tape for tapered threads it helps seal them but also aids with removal stopping corrosion on the threads, Loctite 55 is well recommended Thumbs Up 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

I too use the smallest amount of PTFE tape.
Used to use it on large industrial motors and gearboxes when I was a apprentice - however that was a long time ago and knowledge and technology has advanced!

I also use a small amount of teflon tape. As with any other sealing material, there is always some risk of sealing material getting into the oil, but that will only happen if the plug is taken out, and the threads are not cleaned of the previous used sealing material before refitting the plug.

I actually prefer the teflon tape over some liquid thread sealing compounds as is far easier to clean the threads. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Magnetic drain plugs do come with some sort of sealant; what is it? https://www.lrdirect.com/tyb500120-plug-drain
I also used a bit of teflon tape on the filler plugs. Just to make sure.

Funnily enough, mine is currently leaking lightly and I plan to put some teflon tape on it in an attempt to fix it!

I use a light duty thread lock on all the drain plugs.

It doesn't lock it more than usually,but it makes an excellent thread sealant.

Loctite 248 is maximum strength.

I use loctite 222 that is meant for small screws

That Loctite 222 is good for many items, just enough without being any problem especially with small items.

Teflon tape, I do use it a small amount for the diff plugs. Never had the slightest issue with it.

Never used it, shouldn't need it. If a tapered bung in an oil-filled unit is seizing up then it ain't getting taken out often enough, and if it leaks then there is a fault with it. ---
