United Kingdom 2003 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Havana
TD5 Clutch Judder.
My TD5 (or maybe it is me..) has developed a judder at very low speeds, when pulling away it jerks and judders. I reckon 110000 miles would be about time for a clutch and DMF to let go, and am now considering changing the lot. Any recommendations for the release bearing and fork, thinking of upgrading if the parts are available? (I know that for the older models there are heavier duty forks and bearings available.)

Naturally for the clutch itself I would only use a Valeo or Borg & Beck or similar.

Any other jobs worth doing whilst I've got the lot out?

Mine has recently but when I've done 5 or 6 miles it goes away. Most pronounced in first when pulling away. My thoughts put this down to the amount of water I've been through over the past month or two as it appears to "dry" out after a few miles and lets face it, it's not been that often we've had a dry morning. It was better on the first drives of the day over the weekend, the first time for ages it has been dry in the morning. I do not experience any clutch slip when driving around so will wait to see if it "cures itself" or just goes away when the drier weather eventually comes and for now just drive accordingly.

They can do this due to rusting, but would not be surprised if a clutch and DMF were tired at that milage. All I would do if you do change, is fit all new, and all main dealer parts, they've lasted a good milage this time.

fork is cast and should be fine. mine went at 110k had the bearing, DMF and friction plate and cover done. Cheers

I've noticed this on mine since its been cold and damp lately and mine had a new clutch flywheel and the lot just over a year ago

I've got the same too, my clutch & DMF were changed about 20,000m ago, it's only since we've had all this damp weather.

Any oil leaks from the back of your rocker cover? Possibly a source of contamination.

TD5s (both Defender and Disco) seem to be very prone to this and it isn't always easy to cure. My Disco became juddery from about 130k miles so I had a complete new clutch and flywheel (all OEM and dealer fitted). The old parts which I got back to inspect all appeared fine, and the friction plate had plenty of thickness left. New clutch was fine for the next 10k miles or so, but then started juddering just like the old one.

I suspect that the problem goes beyond the clutch itself, and is influenced by slop in the driveline as well as soft suspension bushes etc.

I have found that it is possible to develop a technique which minimises the propensity to judder, by holding the RPMs little higher than I normally would as the clutch starts to bite and then allowing them to drop as engagement progresses.

All in all I don't feel that the DMF and clutch on the TD5 is the best bit of design!

I'll agree with Blackwolf, first few standing starts I will pull away with higher revs and "slip" the clutch and as the engine temperature reaches normal with a few miles covered then I can then pull away normally i.e. let the clutch out and then apply the power. There is quite a lot of transmission slack on mine which really makes me want the smoothest of starts possible Whistle

Interesting. I would not have thought that damp weather should affect a clutch as much as that.

Has anyone recently experienced this or found a cure?

My Td5 has 52k miles on and started doing this last winter. Juddering at the bite point on pull away. Only does it when cold and pulling away with no throttle. If you give it more throttle and slip than normal it’s ok or less noticeable. Once’s shes warmed up it’s fine. Seems a bit worse now it’s colder. I was planning to change to a full lof smf kit at some stage but I didn’t want to do it yet.

Car isn’t remapped and doesn’t tow so hasn’t had heavy use

First check should be for rocker cover leak at the rear where the 'half moon' section seals the end injector rocker shaft recess. This can leak oil down into the bellhousing and contaminate the clutch plate.

Other thing to check is for a leaking FPR which can cause diesel to get onto the clutch plate.

My Td5 has always juddered when cold/damp though. Have just taken the clutch/dmf out and they all seem fine so dont think they are the actual cause. I agree with Blackwolf that the drivetrain slack, soft bushes, worn transmission and engine mountings exaggerate the issue though.

Mine has is sometimes mostly while reversing. It does that from when I bought it and I was thinking I change it when it gets worse. Still waiting on that since 2009. It is not slipping or giving other bad signs so it is still fitted. Roel
