I'd love one. At work I only drive between 60-120 miles on a daily basis. For off-roading you get maximum torque at zero rpm.

We are currently looking into the new battery chainsaws. They have very good power delivery. Only one problem they don't feel real.

I remember using an electric chainsaw when I was about 13 !.. but that was mains powered Wink

However, I dare say an electric landie would feel real enough - just imagine it's a super-smooth V8 !

Um, most electric motors have almost no torque at zero rpm? Except series-wound types, but I don't know if they'd be any good on a car.

The thing I'd be most concerned about is the cost of replacement batteries. E.g. the li-ion battery in my phone is goosed after a year's use and now goes flat in 6hrs. Will the same thing happen to the (£10k) battery pack?

Eh ?... What good would any electric motor be if it has almost zero torque at zero RPM ? Not true I'm afraid.

You're right about the batteries though - hugely expensive, especially Li-Po ! but, properly managed, they should be good for between 5 and 10 years - that's roughly 2,500 - 3,000 cycles.... and even then, if you have a decent management system, you'd most likely find yourself replacing a few at a time, as opposed to the whole lot.

Well I did doubt myself. Just looking at the torque curve of the tesla roadster. It's 200 Ibs per ft at 0 through to 6000 rpm. That thing is basically a lotus but the batteries make it heavy.

Think once batteries or an alternative power source is sorted electric will be fantastic.

One down side is you'll hear all the other nasty noises defenders make.

Hybrid may be the answer.?

Electric cars are the spawn of satan, here am I trying to make an honest living finding fossil fuels and you bbuggerss want electric cars. But then again think how much fossil fuel we ll need for the power stations to generate electrickery, happy days Cool Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

The way forward is to treat the battery as the fuel source not part of the vehicle .
You pull into BP the automated system takes out your batteries and inserts new ones , you pay off you go. It is then all about infrastructure ( which exists now ) and standardised battery systems .
You don't own all the fuel you car will need from day 1 so why own a battery !

So in brief all we need is the car manufacturers , fuel companies , politicians from all countries in the world to agree a standard. Can't see any problems myself. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response
