Rear drive shafts Puma 2007_Aftermarket, OEM or genuine
Eventually started the investigation for the clunking noise Smile. Identified wear on both rear shaft splines, where meeting the drive (hub) flange. However, slightly more on the left hand side. Nevertheless, aim to replace both. With 67 000 km on the clock.

My question is, are aftermarket drive (half) shafts e.g. from Britpart alright? Or is it worth spending the extra money on OEM parts in this case. Find the genuine, witch are the parts I commonly seek to be way too pricy. Shocked Already purchased OEM hub flanges as I gambled on that it was only them that was faced with wear Very Happy .

What is your experience in this regard? Aftermarket, OEM or genuine?
Note. Original differential.

I fitted the one piece versions from LOF as they seemed a good compromise price-wise from my previous Ashcroft shafts and new genuine versions. No complaints so far but I'd advise painting the external part of the flange as the coating isn't great and they soon go rusty in standard form. 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

Go single piece rear shafts and do away with the rubbish 2 piece design. They’ll only wear again, unlike the 1 piece shafts. 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

When I bought a pair of genuine LR single-piece halfshafts in 2017 (Short halfshaft LR072976, Long halfshaft LR072977, superseding FTC3270 and FTC 3271 respectively) they were priced at a blistering £294.29 + VAT each, so over £700 for a pair. Fortunately my dealer at the time was as outraged as I was by that insanity and gave me enough of a discount to mean that the price was reduced to a level that was ridiculous rather than criminal.

Britpart, LOF, and the other pattern parts do seem to have a good reputation for these halfshafts and at under £100 per shaft even I would probably check in at my local asylum if I bought genuine again! Laughing

Incidentally JLR claims that the Genuine Parts halfshafts are manufactured in South Korea, which is (probably unfairly) not a country I associate with fine engineering, and I think it is quite possible that the aftermarket parts come from the same factory anyway.

Genuine half shaft pictures below, but to be fair - this Defender has an Ashcroft locker.

I replaced my Ashcroft HD shafts and flanges with genuine one-piece because I became thoroughly fed up with the fretting and wear on the shaft/flange interface. It does happen with Ashcroft shafts too, but not as quickly as with other makes.

Now if only Ashcroft made one-piece shafts ...

Is there such a thing as genuine one-piece?
For those of you who have installed one-piece, are there any drawbacks/cons? Seems to be various aftermarket versions of the one-piece.

Yes. I have genuine LR shafts on mine. Upgraded to them. Pure chance I came across them. Seem to be very rare now.

All positive in terms of upgrade. Getting rid of another failure point of the 2 piece wearing and potentially losing drive. There’s far less play in the drive line with 1 piece shafts. 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

Yes, See Item 20 for one piece shafts for a 90.

I do not see any downsides of fitting one piece halfshafts. Also if you break one, it usually goes next to the integral flange, so less likely to damage a diff, and easier to pull out. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Not really an issue for most but if travelling in remote (especially dusty areas) and you need to adjust, regrease or change a wheel bearing then with the one-piece shafts you would need to remove the whole shaft and keep it stored clean, whereas with the 2-piece shaft you only need to worry about the flange. Not a biggy but something to bear in mind.

Good point though. Good to hear that it does not seem like anyone is suffering from increased vibrations. Other than the genuine, I am led to believe that the LOF version is the better aftermarket option?

I would imagine Lof and Britpart are the same items.

Same in my case. Abused with a rear locker on my 110"

Now I wonder what would´ve happened to a one piece halfshaft.

This reply is probably a bit late but I have had both replaced at different times. One genuine and the other a pattern part. The only difference I can tell is the non genuine shaft flange quickly became rusty otherwise no problem
