Idling surges
A while ago I noticed that my MY09 110 would idle strangely after a long run on the motorway.

I'd come to a stop, and the motor chugging/rattling (normal diesel sounds) would gradually get more "intense", or louder... almost like a surge (but the RPM would remain the same).

A second later there would be a slight catch or hesitation (almost like it is going to stall), and it would be back to normal.

It'll do this for a short time after as well... Anyone ever have this happen to them?

Idle surge
Hi,
I had a similar experience once when travelling through mid Spain when the idle was erratic after filling up with diesel at a petrol station.
I then drained the filter, and refilled with diesel - no problem since!
I put it down to contaminated fuel.

I had a similar experience with my Defender. I too felt the problem might have been fuel related and drained some fuel from the fuel filter. Water and other rubbish came out. Draining the rubbish from the filter fixed the problem.

The problem arose again after a trip to the bush. Vehicle idle was a little erratic and slight loss of power. Drained fuel from the filter again and water and fine sand was flushed out. Not good! After draining some fuel from the filter the car ran like new.

My Defender runs very smoothly and has a very constant idle. If this changes, the first thing I check is the fuel filter and now drain a little fuel on a regular basis. All water and sand now gone.

Don't drain too much at a time or you will stall the engine by creating an air lock in the fuel line. I found this out the hard way and it did not take much loss of fuel through draining to do this. It is a real pest getting the thing started again with air in the fuel line.

Thanks guys for the info.

I thought initially it might be the fuel when it happened in the past, but I've been back to the place I usually use and it just happened after about 1/2 a tank consumed.

I'll dig up 22900013A's thread to see what he posted.

Hello,

I had the same, once i've lost the water tank cap, some idles had occured. I've leveled cooling and it never happens again. If you have a T4 or faultmate, look at temperature of the engine when you drive.

My 07 defender has very similar problem, occasionally it will not idle correctly when stopped at the traffic lights, with the revs moving up and down. I have also had the hesitiation and feeling it was about to stall. Then for next several days all is fine? Confused
Had EGR valve changed several months ago, but still got this intermitant problem. Any ideas?

It hasn't done it since, and does it quite rarely. Very strange indeed.

I recently had the fuel pressure rail and metering valve replaced under warranty though that only came about after receiving dtc P1169. The only thing I can suggest is to monitor the fuel pressure at the rail to see what readings you get at idle and at known rpm's ie: 800rpm=? ,1000rpm=?, 2000rpm=? etc,etc. You will need some sort of monitoring tool like the nanocom, hawkeye or msv2 to accomplish this. However if you have a scangauge 2 you can enter a new code into x gauge and this will give you a new gauge for monitoring the fuel rail pressure. The original FPR gauge on scangauge is not compatible with the CANSF protocol but this code does work on CANSF vehicles:

TXD: 07E00123.
RXF: 044105230000.

Cool... thanks for the scangauge settings. I'll hook it myself as well and see if this issue applies to my motor.

It could also be a sticking EGR valve, especially if it is stuck open as this will cause uneven running at idle almost is if it is starving for fuel, although it will be starving for O2 instead. If you have a scangauge 2 then there is an xgauge to monitor the EGR valve:

I experienced this - hadn't started the 90 for a few days, turned it over this morning, fine for the first couple of seconds and then it started reving up and down all by itself - only stopped when I began to drive it. Ok after that.

Hmm, erratic idling apparent on starting from cold again today. Unlike yesterday when it surged up and down the revs, this time they kept dipping, almost to the point where I thought it would stall. This lasted about 10 seconds or so and then sorted itself out. It's booked into the dealers on Wednesday for a few other little problems to be looked at whilst it's still under warranty. I'll add this to the list.
