Hi all,
In August we will travel along the Irish South Coast for our holiday, camping and/or B&B. Anyone advice for nice places to visit, camping sites, green lanes? Not exactly the south coast but if you have time, spend sometime in the Burren in Co. Clare. Also worth a look is Aillwee Caves and the Rock Shop, which sells rocks with fossils in them.Both on line with co-ordinates. Great place to lose yourself for some hours.Check out Cragganowen between Limerick and Ennis which is a good place with reconstructed ringforts and early settlement sites. Mitchelstown caves in Co. Court also.
Get the OS regional maps at 1cm = 2.5kms (or 1in = 3.95 miles) and just lose yourself. There are four of these covering Ireland. Any tourist office will have lots of brochures and free maps for local stuff and they are well worth getting. Beware that a lot of towns only allow you to park in one spot for a limited time and you have to move so if you find somewhere like a train station that does all day parking it is always cheap and safe.Any coastal road, the smaller the better, will be a revelation. For this the 1:50,000 maps are great. Any brown road sign will be highlighting items like castles and things. Observe the speed limits (in kms) as speed cameras abound. Thanks all for the reactions, though they were posted after we started our trip, so I saw 'm just after we came home...
Nonetheless, we had a fabulous time in Ireland, we did an approx. 1000 km round tour trough southern Ireland, spent most of the time in the Kerry district. Beautiful landscapes, some lovely greenlanes, and camping "with a view"!
