Over the years, EVERY Defender I've owned (from new) has leaked like a sieve from the bulkhead, door & windscreen; as a matter of course I always conduct the following measures:

Seal the rubber windscreen both on top & underneath
Seal the rubber door seals especially in the area of the windscreen & bulkhead
Seal every single entry on the bulkhead from the engine bay
Seal the foam gasket between the windscreen & bulkhead
Remove blocks & put ACF grease in the holes (not too much though)

The above measures will usually solve any water ingress.

I use Arbormast for the windscreen rubber & put a thin layer on the outer of the foam gasket, for the rest I've found black gutter repair to be the most effective sealant.

Hope this helps!

Hope you don’t mind me asking a couple of questions Fat Cog - probably obvious but
I’ll ask anyway!

By ‘seal every single entry’ do you mean totally fill the holes/grommets with sealant? What happens when/if you need to access them again?

And the black gutter repair - is that the stuff that comes in tin and is a thick black sticky sort of fibrous stuff?

Hi MussEd

By every single entry I mean if somethings going through the bulkhead from the engine compartment, wires, cables etc & reasonable access can be gained, I usually put a thin layer of gutter repair around the hole, bracket, grommet or whatever & the stuff is fairly easily removed & cleaned off at a later date.

This is the type of stuff:

I've also had fairly good results with Tiger Seal on the windscreen/bulkhead seal, its a bit more sticky than gutter repair but last longer:

Arbormast for the windscreen rubber:

https://www.dortechdirect.co.uk/arbomast-a...reens.html

I also bung ACF50 waterproof grease in the window block holes & also have found these gaskets from Powerful UK (brilliant company) to be the best fit:

& to think, we love these vehicles!!!! Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

Yannis,

My 2.2 Puma seal has a notch/gap behind both window blocks.

That notch is normal(i contacted landrover) for defenders window seals (my guess its a lr off the peg cheap seal where the cut (not full thickness)into the seal allows it to be used on curves) ill find a picture if i can!use captain trolleys and seal with silicone or grease!

see here.. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic38849-15.html

I have had exactly the same leak on my -08 Puma. Mended all above mentioned things which made the leak smaller but intermittently it would still appear. In the end I noticed it would leak most when not parked level

I then Installed a snow cowl, and that solved the leak completely. There were a lot of old crap & mud under the air intake on the fender, which made the water leak out valve not work properly.

Mine are all leaking like the proverbial sieve....

Is there a difference in quality of windscreen seals? I looked online and see Bearmach etc.

Any recommendations before I order a couple to try.

Thank you Thumbs Up
