Wing mirror arm disassembly.

These are on the job list for a refurb next weekend. Getting them off the hinge is easy enough, but how do you strip them once off? They need a refurb and I don’t want to just paint over the Gasket/spacers where the mirror hinges at the door hinge bracket (hopefully that makes sense!).

Usually they cannot be dismantled non-destructive way. They are not designed to be serviced, just replaced.

Cheers blackwolf. That’s a shame, I know they’re only cheap but it way more satisfying to overhaul than to replace.

Ordered a pair. Any tips for how to prolong their life so I’m not doing the same again in a few years?

Strip them back and paint them properly is the only way really. Or buy some made and finished by someone else (e.g. Optimill).

Another possible option would be to paint a new clear lacquer over the top of the black paint on the new ones. Never tried doing that, but it would theoretically add some more protection and possibly prolong the lifespan of the poor quality black paint.

Or you can just religiously apply ACF50 to them every month and hope for the best!

Sadly, these black-finished parts have just progressively got worse and worse over the years. The mirror arms on my 2005 Td5 are still fine. The ones on my Dad's 2012 2.2 have corroded with paint flaking off.

i'm not so sure about reduction in quality. I've got some photos of dads 1983 110 at 8 years old and theres no paint left on them, just white corrosion - same with the windscreen hinges. 1953 80"

Perhaps then it would be fairer to say that there was an unusual moment in 2005 when someone accidentally painted something properly!
