Safety/security tips
Safety is important and if you travel widely you may land up in rather less safe places then normal.

Carry two wallets. Your main one which is concealed and a real 'dummy' wallet

'Dummy' wallet has all those out of date store cards in, a few thousand dong some rupees etc. If you are mugged give your dummy wallet out rather then risk being stabbed etc.

Car keys. Loose those and you could be in big trouble. Put one somewhere on outside of vehicle which is secure but easy to get at without complicated tools

Credit/debit cards have at least two, one for each major bank system. If the Visa system is down the mastero system might be working.

So what are YOUR tips?

Hello,
Dummy wallet what a great idea.

No jewelry or fancy watches, keep nice cameras out of sight. I feel most comfortable carrying as little as possible in areas I do not know well. ie no bag.

Try to look like I dont have much money, which is quite easy Whistle

Just come across this whilst having a browse, so thought I'd add this little nugget...

If your vehicle is fitted with central locking then it's worth disabling it on the rear door. It's very easy for 'locals' to open rear doors and grab whatever comes to hand. Nearly happened to me once with a Disco I in Morocco. I was just pulling off and some kids made a bid for the rear door. I stamped on the brakes and the weight slammed it closed again, but we travalled with the doors locked from then on. Darren

on the same thread as the dummy wallet, i did read of some overlanders getting a built in secure lock box, then got a cash tin and a bike lock and stashed some randome notes old credit cards and expired pass ports,

i've also been told that (but not managed it myself yet) that there are two catches on the puma gear stick, you press in both sides through the rubber boot and the gear leaver comes loose and so stops gears being changed, when i manage it i'll post some pics.

A high res colour copy of you key documents (a few of them) help - that way you can hand them over and not worry if you dont get them back Mike

taking the gear stick off isn't worth doing as the remaining section is long enough to change gear with no problem,

plus if you want to try it, please don't pull the stick through the rubber gatter, its a b**ch to pull back over!

Best tip for documents is to get a hi res scan of them, then e-mail to yourself. that way, you can access them (as long as theres web access) anywhere in the world

A friend of mine also declared his passport stolen, then got a new one from passport office. That way he has what looked like a genuine passport ( ie no corner cut off and expired one). If held up, he could give the old "stolen" passport to the thief. Its of no use as it would be confiscated as soon as anybody tried to use it.

Most criminals in these places are fully aware of safes and lock boxes overlanders fit, so it may be worth the old double bluff. Hide your valuables somewhere and place a few quid and old credit cards in the safe.

Massive error.
Falsely reporting a passport as stolen is fraud and potentially carries a custodial sentence.
If you think HM Customs won't ever find it, get down the docks and watch them do a vehicle search some time.

A good point! Don't make the mistake of assuming all thieves are idiots, for some this is their living and they are good at it. They are more than aware of the things you can do to "fool" them.
