Has anyone 'plumbed in' a sat nav into a 2.4tdci Defender, with the new dash? I saw one recently that just had a inch of cable from the back of the dash to the sat nav holder on the windscreen, very neat and tidy.

Any advice appreciated.

Are we talking an in dash one with a motorised screen out of the stereo or are we talking like the SVX a Garmin (tomtom etc) on a fixed mount with a hardwired connection.

No, just a Garmin on the windscreen, but wired from out of the rear of the dash.

Cant see that being a huge problem.

2 ways, get a normal 12v garmin cable, or get one of the ones they used to do which doesnt have a socket.

Take it down to (as i would do) its own 12v source or to the 12v socket and wire it in there. You will have to drill a small hole i expect - get a gromet the size of the cable and make the hole to suit. You will also probably need a 90 degree drill adaptor to get the drill into position without removing the dash.

Just to say my 2nd hand Defender came with a wire and plug sticking out the top centre of the dash, just below the windscreen, just as Chay has seen. I presume this was to power the previous owners Satnav or phone etc...
There is no cable hole drilled - it just tucks down the back of the dash in a similar way to the heated windscreen feeds. Also there are no other drilled holes, so whatever it was powering must have been suction mounted.

I would like to use this myself, but it doesn't fit my Garmin Nuvi.
I will probably be replacing my Satnav within the next few months as the maps are way out of date, (and it seems to be a similar cost to buy a new unit than to buy new maps!) - it would be good to get one that can use this plug...
My current Garmin has a mini USB type of connector - the one sticking up is like a laptop plug (the small hollow tube type) - does anyone know if TomTom or any other Satnavs use such a plug?
Or if it is possible to get an adaptor?

I have done what you are talking about. The power cable for my Garmin 276C comes through a hole I drilled in the top of the dash and is hard wired to a multi cigarette lighter socket I fitted to the side of the console in the passenger foot well. It is easy to remove the the front of the centre console, just undo the 2 screws in the front of the centre console and use a wide blade to pop the whole thing forwards. This gives access to the area behind and routing cables becomes quite easy.

Many thanks for the advice, you must be right as my chum now tells me that Halfords charge £39.99 for doing the same thing, so it must be both easy and take less than 10 minutes!

You need to fit a cigar lighter behind the dash to power the nav,you can't just cut the end off the lead and tap into a feed.
