2011 Defender engine knock
Hi everyone. Been visiting this excellent site for ages and helped me in past resolve issues with my 2008 LR 110 Defender. Now got a 2011 90 and need some help please.

Had this 2011 Defender 90 for 3 years. Its the 2.4 Duotorq engine with 140,000 km on it. Always ran perfect then whilst driving back on motorway about 3 months ago my engine suddenly developed a rattle. Oil light came on briefly then went off. Car performance was never affected and as in remote location I had to drive 200km home on it. Car still has same pull power as before, starts on the button. I later changed oil and all was good with no debris and I have never had a no loss of coulant and it doesnt overheat.
Took the car 3 months ago to garage (non LR) and he has flushed engine, then replaced injectors and stripped down to see if seats are properly set but all above hasnt stopped the knocking. I live in S. France so communication a little hard between mechanic and I but had car 3 months now and I think he ran out of ideas.
Is there anyone else who had same engine knock. I attach a link to video of knocking.

Thanks in advance Nigel

Might be worth trying a local Ford Citroen person as it’s a ford/Citroen engine?

Nothing to do with Citroen it's Ford. It's not the PSA engine used in the Freelander 2 and Evoque.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I have one here with a Citroen stamped crankshaft. Think it’s the HDi with them?

You're both right, sort of. It is actually an entirely Ford designed engine and unrelated to the Evoque/Freelander/XF engine. However Citroen/Peugeot use it in the Relay/Boxer(Jumper in FR) and Fiat in some of the Ducatos (all the same Van). It's possible Ford outsource manufacture of some components. I mean it makes sense to have one plant forging and grinding crankshafts for different engines, but the Puma engines are (were) all assembled in Dagenham.

The Puma engine was actually launched in late 1999 with the Mk3 Mondeo and 2000MY Transit, PSA/Ford only started joint developing Diesels in 1998 - a year isn't enough time to develop an engine. For the first few years of the partnership it basically consisted of PSA buying some Ford engines and Ford buying some PSA engines, while working on a new range behind the scenes. The Mk4 Mondeo switched to the PSA based DW engine found in the Freelander 2, XF etc. The first ones they really joint developed from scratch were the 1.4/1.6 Hdi/TDCI engines, which didn't appear until about 2002.

I would agree it is likely there are plenty of local mechanics in France used to working on the engine in Relay/Boxers (Jumpers), more than there are Land Rover specialists.

Thanks everyone so far, but does anyone have any experience of the likely problem here. I am sure this is not unique in anyway?

Could be he’s not coded the injectors, done any of the learning procedures etc. Saw you’re in France and thought one of the guys would know the engine better and probably more common in those brands.

Think the cranks and blocks in even a lot of older transit engines are the same the difference is in the fuel system, pistons, piston bowl size and length of the con rods.

These two cranks came out of two Defender 2.4 tdci. 2.2 crank is the same as the 2.4.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Puma engine was based on the older Transit Di engine, which in turn was based on the older York engine.

The PSA DW engines (2litre and 2.2litre) used in the XF and Freelander 2 are basically an updated version of the older XUD engines.

Quite often manufacturers will carry over major castings and blocks with minor changes onto 'new' engines. Because it means they can continue using the same forging and machining lines for decades.

The left hand crank in your pic looks much better finished than the right hand one. Forging looks rougher on the right.

Well I've listened carefully to your video and it sounds like mine did after this happened at 110k miles-

Rattles are hard to pin down but it might be a good idea to have the timing chain checked.
