Power steering leak
The PAS fluid has just leaked out on my 1997 300 TDi Defender CSW.
It looks like its leaking from the seal next to the drop arm.
Looking at replacement boxes what the difference between 6 bolt and 4 bolt? Is it the number of bolts looking from the top?
Where can I get one from and are the exchange ones any good?
How much do you have to take off to get at the pump?
Thanks in advance.

If yours is a 300Tdi then it'll be a 4 bolt. Pretty sure it's how many bolts go through the chassis.

Access to the pump? That's under the alternator. Do you mean that or simply removing the steering box from the chassis?

Be worth cleaning off the oil with brake cleaner and seeing if the leak is actually coming from that seal. If I remember correctly that's just a dust cover and the seal is internal. Ed

Pump depending on how they've aligned the jubilee clips you can probably do by removing only the pulley and alternator. But it's a bit fiddly negotiating pipes, there's reasonable access from underneath to get at the pipes. Ed

I think it’s the steering box. Oil all over the sump guard.
Steering is heavy at low speed and makes a noise like a worn wheel bearing when you turn the wheel.

Have you checked the fluid level? Ed

No fluid in the reservoir. It’s in a pool under the front of the vehicle.

Question Exclamation it’s the number of bolts securing the top cover on!

Yep, number of bolts securing top cover.

Best avoid running power steering pump with low or no fluid as likely to damage pump.
Also try to avoid holding wheel on full lock as puts full pump pressure on the box.

Hope it comes out easy. Pipes can become quite attached. Had to cut and replace on a Disco 1 in an earlier life. Ex scottish & southern 110 Td5 van (shed) with PTO driven winch (L-R special vehicles)
Before that, Disco 1, Freelander 1, 26105382 80" with a 1600cc (not much slower)
