engine
I have had a 2008 puma and I have also driven a 2008 freelander 2.2 on many occasions with and without the same large and loaded trailer that I tow with the Puma.
In my honest opinion, the 2.2 engine wins hands down in both low down Torque and power. The freelander also did 45mpg on average and that was an auto box.
I don't expect that sort of MPG from a defender with the 2.2 but 35mpg would be reasonable I reckon ????
Hopefully the don't detune the motor for defender use. 150+ bhp would be nice.
With the way fuel prices are, I would welcome the 2.2 as apposed to the TDV6 option.
I'm holding out to see what new engine is fitted before I order a new one.

I'd hurry & get the 2.4. Any engineer will tell you: extracting more power from a smaller engine will only result in more stress, leading to an early failure.

There's no replacement for displacement!

imho the TD5 is more of a deafener ... had one to drive for a ride and the PI Diesel engine was kinda noisy, or military jet so to say

My reply was in answer to the suggestion that a more powerful, but smaller engine would be more stressed, so it's better to have the older bigger capacity engine. If so for 2.4 Puma -vs- 2.2 new engine then why not 2.5 Td5 -vs- 2.4 Puma? Thumbs Up

Didn't want to get into discussing the merits of the Td5 in general as this is a thread about the new Defender engine.

There are quite a few posts on this Ian.

When the dealer ordered mine nearly four weeks ago I was told it was one of the last 2.4s available - and thats for late July build. Apparently all orders taken since then will have the 2.2 with the DPF (in all but a few variants) and the earliest deliveries for those will be in October. Whether thats true or not I'm not sure but thats what the dealer said anyway

I wonder why they did not use this engine from the outset rather than the transit engine?

It isn't, but as far as I'm aware it's a 2.2 Transit engine going in the Defender and not the Freelander engine. Thumbs Up John

Besides the 2.2 tdci engine, will there be any other changes coming in August? I was thinking along the lines of those plastic bumpers. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Surely you could just swap it over after, I doubt they are gonna change the chassis mounts
