Ignition switch
Whilst away in Yorkshire this weeken I lost all gauges and more worryingly windscreen wipers. Anyhow after a touch of field repair found a poor connection or wire at the ignition switch. So question is should I replace all of the ignition barrel of change the switch? I am leaning to a complete swap as it is 27yr old. 1990 200tdi conversion 90

Mine is 34 years old and still working well, on a vehicle that has done over 385,000 miles.
If you have already identified, and repaired, the fault. Why give yourself additional work?

I am having problems with my tdi ignition, suspect the switch. Quick check of Haynes, states thatI need to remove the steering lock to access it. This does not seem right to me.

So does anyone know how to change the ignition switch, without removing the steering lock?

Given that the electrical element of the ignition switch (rather than the key part) is only retained by a small screw. Then yes it should be possible to remove that element without removing the steering lock. You can be assured that access to the screw will try your patience though and will require the removal of the steering column shroud and probably most of the instrument panel.
