Turbo knackered, or something else?
I'm feeling a little despondent, as I think I may have done some serious damage to my turbo or something else. During my trip to Morocco this year, I spotted that my air box was not sealing properly, with a fine layer of dust inside the lid of the housing on the clean side Shocked

I do not know how it was leaking, the lid is seated properly (hooked in under the wing)and the filter was in correctly as far as I could tell. The filter was quite heavy with sand/dust, so maybe the increase pressure drop was causing it to drawer air through somewhere else? Perhaps around the outside of the filter? I can't really tell if it is still a problem as I don't generally drive in dusty conditions here.

Anyway, the problem I have since that trip is, when the car has been sat a few days, when I start it up and driver off, the first time I give at any real throttle I get blue smoke from the exhaust. It then clears and is fine. Is this a sign oil is getting past the turbo seals or could it be something else? Any pointers on diagnosing what it is for sure? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I think Capelandy had the same problem time ago.

Thanks Eduardo. It's hard to tell from that thread whether the issue was dust something unrelated to do with the EGR or PCV systems. It's ashame the photos have gone as I would have like to compare it to my own intake. However, it doesn't sound like the same symptoms as I have had, no mention of smoke.

I appreaciate my first post was bit of a ramble! And this one!

What I'm trying to understand is what might be damaged/leaking to cause the blue smoke? The symptoims are blue smoke only on the first substantial acceleration after the car has been switched off more than a day or two. No smoke in normal driving or at idle that I can tell. No smoke if it has only been a short while since I last drove it. Engine runs fine, no fault codes according to the Nanocom.

My basic understanding is that it can point to turbo seals, but could it be indicative of anyhting else? It would suggest to me that oil is slowly seeping into the inlet or cylinders someway or other whilst the engine is off. Are there any other routes via the cam cover or injectors or something? Would the turbo seals be damaged by dust bypassing the air filter? Is there any kind of logical diagnostic process to isolate the problem? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Blue smoke after start up usually indicates valve stem seals.
