Door barrel spinning
Good evening.

I’m hoping someone can help.

My 06’ TD5 Defender drivers side door lock is not functioning as it should.

It is currently possible to unlock the door using anything that fits inside the barrel.
The key does still work but the barrel is free to move that then enables the door to be unlocked.

Is the cure to order a new set of barrels, or is there some kind of adjustment I can make?

Thanks in advance.

If anyone has any ideas of how to cure this I would be very appreciative.

Ive got the door card off. A lot of the internet says about a screw in the rear of the barrel. But neither by drivers door or passengers door has this screw.

maybe a TD5 had a different variant of door lock mechanism?

Thanks
Ross

Whilst the later ones are a slightly different design, all of the lock barrels work in the same way: there's a pin that protrudes from the side that locks them in place in the handle and which is retracted when the key is inserted. If yours spin without the key then that pin is either broken or jammed.

Each barrel has a threaded hole in the end to receive a screw that secures it to the handle. There should also be a small plastic crank on the end that operates the locking mechanism. It's difficult to see as there's quite a lot of gubbins in the area, but it must be there otherwise your door wouldn't lock or unlock.

It's difficult to know whether the existing barrel can be salvaged without taking it apart, unfortunately. It might just need freeing off and lubricating but, equally, it might be scrap. Darren

It sounds like the pin is missing from the barrel.
If I buy new barrels will it come with the pin or can I buy the pin separately?

I assume you’ve tried lock lubricants?

The lock operates as it should. The key works etc. But if I put a screwdriver in the lock for example. I would also be able to unlock the door. No key required.

The locating pin is an integral part of the lock barrel and not available separately. Darren

Ok. So I’ll order a new lock barrel and hopefully this will fix it.

You will probably find the lock barrel is seized into the the outer mounting... if not too far gone then cleaning and re-lube will fix.

If just a rusty mess you will need a new outer door handle and lock set (inc ign barrell if you want to keep the vehicle a keyed set). The bit the lock siezes into is part of the door handle, not the lock.

Or - if you have central locking, I personally prefer to fit a none door lock handle. IRB

I'd just swap the barrels personally, I cleaned and relubed mine once and it was just as bad within a couple of months

I’m still struggling to understand how to remove the barrel. Mine is a TD5 06 model.

I’ve attached a picture of my door lock mech.

I don’t have a screw or anything to undo.

Should I?

Ok. I’ve found the circlip and removed the barrel. The pin is worn down to being flush. I’ll buy a new set and replace.

so.... mine are attached using circlip,

If I replace this one I may as well replace them all. (driver door, passenger door, rear door, ignition.)

So.. where can I find these. Searching TD5 lock barrel comes up with results, but not the same circlip design as the current ones.

I want an easy life and a straight swap

Thanks
Ross
