Service intervals
Hi all.

So I have a 2004 td5 110 xs, She currently sits at 79844 miles.

When I got her in May (75860.2 miles) I gave her a full service at a specialist td5 LR garage, they did everything, the full works... (because I didn't know what she had, had before)...

How often would you say I should do that service?
I'm ignoring what the book say because I want advice from genuine users and defender lovers.

I have just read a speil in the LRO magazine about buying the RR L322 and servicing it, and it got me thinking..., it suggested a 6 monthly service to extend the life of the gearbox...

I want my truck to outlive me, and to have as little trouble with it as possible and am happy doing preventative maintenance.

I use this for my daily drive to work (which isn't far) and most holidays camping, drives to the countryside to go metal detecting etc etc...

What's all your thoughts? I look forward to hearing from you. Regards
Adam

Based on your usage I would say service every year or 10,000 miles.

Not sure what you mean by "the full works" as LR do very little in a service - oil and oil filter, air filter every two years. Not sure how often they change the fuel filter. Brake fluid change is probably never done unless paid for as an extra. They may also grease the hinges and top up the screen wash.

If you plan on keeping it, better to service it your-self.

I do engine oil and filters + air filter every 6k. Then all oils and all filters every 12k.

Genuine filters or the OEM (Mann, Bosch etc...)

I do 12 - 18k a year from daily driving ti work, off roading and expedition type events Instagram @defender_ventures

I do oil and filters (rotor and cartridge) every 7-10k, air filter every other oil service.

Diff oils, Gearbox oil and Transfer box oil I check about every 6 months (usually before a long journey with a trailer!), if they look bad then I change them!

I probably do 10-15k a year for reference.

I like many TD5 owners only use Genuine filters on the engine and fuel line., personally roughly every 6-8 K. IIRC Srevice interval is 12K. I also only use Castrol which makes it expensive but over 150k on and rather tweaked, its made sense so far. Diffs are 80K but check levels , same with the gearbox.
Don't forget a couple of pumps of grease on the props and UJ's every 6-12 months. The only other thing is Injector wiring loom harness every 2 -3 years. It is in fact a service item, and will stop oil in the loom Thumbs Up

Firstly let me thank you for all your answers and replies.

KMAC - the above quote is what I mean by full works, I just couldnt think of all the parts they changed & oiled (PS - im new to LR) (But in terms of learning it myself, my garage is teaching me - im blessed in that respect that he is teaching me each time I need to go in. Im so far from mechanically minded - but am sooo willing to learn!)

When I first got my TD5, I had no papers but the garage I got it from said they serviced it before every MOT.
So to be sure I had my garage do it (My garage is not a Land Rover Garage - BUT the garage specialise in Land Rovers - up to the TD5 model)

Its a haven for 90's, 110's, defenders, series, etc. Love going there!!

And he only uses genuine LR stuff, has to go to Bedford to get it.. Which is great that he only uses the good stuff, but has been 'a small inconvenience' when I had to wait for parts as he goes once, twice a week. But I would rather wait and have a good part, than he use cheap Chinese copies...

SO... Would you all say @4000 miles it would be too early for an oil change (all oils, ill leave filters)
I could give it another month or 2000 miles(which will be more than a month... Regards
Adam

I'd say so, another month would make sense. Oil changes are simple enough I buy my castrol in bulk 100 lts at a time, same with my filters.(I have 2 TD5's) Dan at Duckworths will sort you a job lot of filter out'. Oil google is your friend but its nearly always on offer somewhere.

So long as you are using the car regularly and doing a reasonable mileage then there is no reason whatsoever to deviate from the book figures. Doing it more frequently won't do any harm, but you're wasting your money.

If you only do 3,000 miles a year or so then maybe there's an argument to do an annual change.

I get mine done every 2 years or 12k which ever is sooner, but I do low mileage relatively and both match up pretty evenly. Brake fluid gets done at the same time additionally too.
As mentioned brake fluid changes are not standard in servicing.
Am I correct in thinking brake fluid is tested on MOT’s now too? I thought I heard it was this year onwards.

Only thing additionally to this I tend to do is change air filter every year, as they do get pretty dirty fast.

If anyone wants to do theirs even sooner that’s just personal choice really.
Each to their own, obviously wouldn’t do any harm at all but will cost a bit more. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

I do a basic service (on my 110 TD5 SW) every 6,000 miles including diesel filter. I do a major service including changing the transmission/diff oils and brake/clutch fluid every two years (24,000 miles) and propshaft grease every 12,000

The vehicle is only used on road.
