Puma gearbox selection problems after new clutch.
New to the forum and the land rover world.

I have a 2008 defender 90 with the 2.4 tdci engine and mt82 box. It had a really hard clutch pedal so along with a couple of mechanic friends we changed the clutch and concentric bearing.

However after refitting the box the gear selection is awful. First to second is ok but heading into third you end up in fifth. It's almost like there is no gate into third.

When you can find all of the gears it drives fine with no noises coming from the box. The area around the bottom of the gear lever where it connects to the ball socket feels notchy. It has all been well greased.

Any ideas???

Many thanks.

Does the clutch pedal feel ok/air free?

As well there is a rubber gaiter at the bottom of the selector than can be jamming the movement. Unlikely though.

Not sure if it possible to fit the friction plate the other way around. Puma 110" SW

They may have tightened up the four bolts holding the gear selector in a little too tight. The manual state 25nm whilst in 3rd gear, but mine was less because the gear change was terrible. I think there is a service action to add a couple of extra bushes in to stand it all off a little. I'll see if I can find the info about it. Thumbs Up

Oh and one other thing, I've seen a few peoples report on the ball/socket being an issue at the bottom of the gear stick. It gets a little rusty and can expand/crack the ball making the gear change pretty bad. Worth a check if you're going back in there. Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the info guys.
The clutch itself is spot on. It bled well and has a good pedal. It's just the actual selection, it doesn't crunch to go into gear.
I'll check the ball and nut torque settings. I'll also carry out the bush upgrade.

Thanks again.
Tim.

Hi Ben
Fitted the bush kit and was better. Now I’ve fitted a short shift kit and it’s perfect.
Thanks all for the advice

Glad to help mate! I’ll be honest I’ve not yet done either, they’re on the ever longer list of thing that are ‘next’.

I’d definitely fit the slick shift. Got the one from Syncro Gearboxes, really well made, but it’s made such a difference. Even the wife drives it now.

I found that when I did mine and went to replace the gear stick it was very stiff to select gears.
Finally worked out that the bush that the gear shift ball fits into is a slight snap fit therefore when fitting the gearshift it was not actually snapping over the ball more like resting on the bottom edge of the ball and applying upward pressure.
I think I actually fitted the bush first to the ball then fitted the whole lot as an assembly fiddly but worked much better.

I found the same, also a tap on top of the gear lever helps to reseat the selector.
