No all it does is convert harmful emissions into less harmful emissions typically through eliminating free radicals via a catalytic process.

For example turning monoxide’s with free radicals into dioxides with no free radicals. Even them it’s virtually impossible to convert 100% I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_exhaust_fluid

Basically it turns the nitrous oxides in the exhaust gas into carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapour.

Just interested, how much is adblu a litre and how much does a typical car / van use?

Never had anything to do with it !

Cheers Keith

Adblue can range from silly prices per litre down to a base of approx 20p/litre. We supply the majority of our customers buying it in 1000l IBC fills at 27-29p, 205l at approx 55-60p and then down to our 20l,10l and 5l containers at 90-110p per litre (The killer being the packaging, shipping and distribution at the smaller end) ex VAT

You will however find it in garages / service stations etc at upwards of £3 per litre which is pure profiteering. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader

The Merc sprinters in our work get topped up every Friday, but I’m not sure how much they take. The Peugeot boxers get about 4K miles before the warning light comes on. I think it’s a 20L container that they take to fill them up again. If you ever run out of Adblue entirely, I believe that the starting cycle is disabled to prevent you from running it without it. It won’t kill the engine if it is running - this would be a safety issue - it’s just not allowed to start once you switch it off. It’s made using pig urine as far as I know, but I am told that it can be made synthetically too. I always thought it was some kind of engine oil or fuel additive, but it’s injected into the exhaust gasses where it does it’s stuff.

Does anyone know if it can be retrofitted? Would make sense with future emission regulations

I’ve looked into it long and hard due to euro 6 being standard in the upcoming ULEZ...

It’s repugnantly expensive, in addition to an Adblue system you need a dpf. Both cost anywhere from £6k Chinese models that do the job to Canadian overengineered £14k. That’s each. So your probably looking £12k in terms of retrofitting.

When it came to the topic of whether it would work they said they couldn’t guarantee it would affect my emission band without a benchmark test, which they said would cost even more money on a rolling road.

Then we talked about performance, they said it would negatively affect my engine through increased exhaust pressure, turbo lag. Then we talked about the maintenance of one of these things, and he said it’s typically a four figure sum to repair.

One of the blokes quoted me £20k and said for the price I would be better if converting it to electric and future proof it, or that I would be better of purchasing a whole new vehicle or just putting up with the ULEZ.

Whilst I don’t live in the proposed ULEZ YET (yet being the operative word) the LEZ starts at brook street end of the A12, and I’m afraid that once the ULEZ is implemented they’ll expand it further.

Looking around for an alternative and the Toyota Land Cruiser is the only one that comes close, but then I’d have to pay congestion charge, so it’s loose-loose. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

Censored it I’m going to hire a load of Eastern Europeans and get them to carry RSJs on the tube in protest, it’ll cost me about the same as the LEZ charge! I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/
