Radio sometime is getting what sounds like interference
Hello

My radio recently is picking up some sort of interference from some other electrical bits in the car? Crackling and just making an odd sound every now and again?

How can I fix this, do I need to add a suppressor? and if so what and how do I wire this in.

edit to add I've just noticed these and given I don;t like messing with electrics would these work on the cables?

Thanks

Scott

Poor quality lights will do this. Is it an analogue or digital radio? I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

USB ports will also cause interference. Need a common mode choke or suppressing bead on the cable

A common mode choke is a ferrite ring with copper coil and a capacitor on each end

Have a look at this thread which gives a detailed explanation of how to make one.

You can also get ferrite rings such as in the pic below but they some have said they are not so effective ( they clip over the cable supplying power to the USB port)

I was getting interference and found it was coming from using a USB charger in the cigarette lighter socket. Changed over to a new one and it was cured.

Hello

This is my set up, The Head unit has a USB input and I have a lead from the back of this to in front of the cup holder with a USB port I can plug in.

I use a short USB to USB C lead to connect my phone to the Unit and then Android auto starts.

I tried unplugging my phone and it still did it. how else can I eliminate what it could be? I'm tempted to get the ferrite rings and try them on the usb cable? from the head unit to where I plug the phone in.

"...from the head unit to where I plug the phone in"

yep this could be where the interference is coming from as even if the phone is not plugged in there is a step down transformer converting 12v to the 5v needed for the USb socket. This is drawing current all the time power is supplied to the stereo.

You can try the ferrite rings to see if they make a difference - they are only a quid or two. They don't always work, you could try folding the cable on itself a few times and then the ferrite ring over the folded part.

I have tried it driving home and back into work without the phone 'plugged' into anything

Still interference?

Is it still the cable causing and issue? I can unplug the phone cable as that's easy but the other one is wired from back of head unit under carpet to the cup holder.

Is one of those ferrite rings worth a try on this USB lead

I was getting this quite a bit after having my tracking installed with the issue being that whenever it sent a notification of my location, which was random, I had said interference. Won't go into specifics on the fix as it has to do with the tracker, but if you have one, that could be it.

I still get it once and awhile but it last 2-5 secs and now that I know what it is, i find it comforting that it gives me piece of mind the kit is working Wink

Good luck

P
