Defender 2.4 engine compression
Hi there,

I just trying to discard problems that produce the overheating in 6th gear at 120 KPH under load. And one of them could be the engine. So, a compression test for the cilinders was performed in my 2.4 TDCi engine.

Results are in the level of 360 PSI and one with 355 PSI. (380-400 are the values for a new 2.4 Puma engine)

According my Indy those values are normal for a motor with almost 300,000 km in the clock and should not be the culprit of the overheating and everything points to the radiator.

Any thoughts?

Possible causes:
- your coolant fluid level is low OR your coolant fluid has wrong water - anti-freeze proportions (
50/50) and doesn't absorb heat in an efficient way,
- you are using a wrong engine oil, which doesn't meet the Ford WSS-M2C913-B/C/D norm,
- your accessory belt is the wrong size or worn out and slipping,
- airflow is restricted by mud, registration plate on the grill, whatsoever...,
- radiator is clogged - change the radiator,
- viscous fan is not working (would cause overheating at low speeds rather than highway speeds),
- the water pump is dying - change the water pump,
- the lower coolant hose is collapsing - put a new hose,
- your CHT sensor is crazy - change the sensor,
- your head gasket is broken and needs changing,
- your head/block is cracked and you need a new engine,
- some or all of the above.

Now, first thing you need to do is a reliable block test with the magical blue liquid tester.
Good luck and let us know what the reason was.

On my search to solve this problem I have change the thermostat to PEL500110 (82C), put the viscous fan spacer, the correct belt (as opposed to the longer 2.2 Puma belt). All of this has made some difference but when on highway at 130kph and 35+C ambient, I still see 100+C on uphills. Than it drops to 82-90C.

Can you describe your case a bit better? Bergos

Tanto tiempo. Any diesel passenger car I have driven, including my hilux, heats up very quickly at FOT going uphill. Since these engines deliver good torque you keep going on 6th or 5th. The obvious thing to do is to rev up the engine (6th to 5th to 4th) so the fan spins at higher revs. Lorry drivers do this all the time.
All the above works if sensors, water pump, etc are in good condition. If it does not then the cooling system is not up for the job. I tend to believe the Puma cooling system isnt very good designed.
Last year going uphill on deep snow with chains over 3000rpm the engine went on limp mode after 5 min or so. Outside temp was probably a few C over 0. Puma 110" SW

Hi Bergos,

All the things that you mentioned has been checked and the only thing where I have some doubts is the radiator.

My problem is similar to yours: Limp mode when Uphill + high ambient temp + high speed in 6th gear. After some seconds temps goes to normal and the engines ends its limp mode and works OK.

I already change the belt, put the fan spacer and change the thermostat to the low temp one.

All sensors are in good conditions and doenst show any sign to be outside the range.
Compression test is as good as the blue liquid test, so I dont see the need to do the other test (quite cheap indeed)

Tanto tiempo MK, cuando nos vamos a juntar?
its what i'm doing today (change to a lower gear to avoid the problem), but is a little bit annoying.
I'm agree that the Puma cooling system are not well designed for high temps.

I'm looking now for replace the radiator with a more efficient Allisport one

Please, don't forget to write something when you solve this.

Right now, even in 40C ambient I don't reach the 115C CHT but sometimes it comes close.

Maybe this is by design, I don't know... I would feel much better if it never goes above 95C. Bergos

Have you had a coolant system pressure test done? Normally will did leaks if you have any.

Td5 and Tdci Radiators always seem to split and leak in the left hand bottom corner seen quite a few fail in that spot.

The 2.4 Tdci isn’t a great engine in my opinion full stop Whistle

Thanks for the answers!

No leakages in the cooling system. Coolant level is the same for months
I usually not try to going up to 110°C.

So... Appears that the uprated radiator from allisport will be the next step (not cheap Sad )

Are you on your original radiator? Has it also done 300,000kms?

If you change it and it was proved to be the culprit then it would be great to remove the end tanks and see if the channels inside are blocked or not?

Hi All,

This happened to mine last week in Spain.
Mine only has 70000 miles.
First time.
I'm not sure what caused it.
Although last year it almost did the same thing and it was cold (xmas)
I think that in hotter climates mine runs about 10 degrees hotter according to the ultragauge.

All the advice given is right on the money! I went through this a few years back, and after all the mods which do help in 50C ambient temperatures! What I found was that with a tune 40% more power, a marginal cooling system has no more too give! What I think is the real cure would be a seriously larger capacity radiator not one of a marginal increase. In lower ambient temperatures there’s never an issue after the mods, only when heavy towing up hill with your welly hard down ! Thumbs Up

I'm with the same radiator but the problem appears at around 100,000+ kms

As I see, some new money will be put on an uprated Allisport radiatior (As soon as Andrew will moveits equipment to his new workshop Smile )
