I might move to the dark side....
.....TDCi Defender

I drive a TD5 110

I never liked the TDCi as l felt it was not a “proper” Defender without the vent flaps and with the Transit engine etc.
I had driven a few and remained unconvinced. Also l had been told that the engine is “only good to 100,000”

But yesterday l drove a 130,000 mile regular TDCi 110 XS and l have to concede, it wasn’t bad. It was quieter and had a better ride quality than my TD5 110 CSW. The engine was lacking the TD5 character but on the motorway it was a fair bit better, quieter and able to cruise about 10mph faster than mine. That sixth gear sure is high! You’d need a remap to avoid down changing on hills.

The tax issue needs care, l’m not paying £510 so it would have to be either a Utility or a post 2012 if l was to buy one.
Currently the later ones are silly money (against the 2007 110 XS SW that l test drove at a more reasonable £17,995 from a dealer)

You need aircon due to the lack of the bulkhead vents. And the cabin feels less spacious due to the big plastic lump of a dashboard, but l am tempted to get one if l am ever in the market for another Defender.

Ive driven a few. Only thing they have going for them imo is they are quiet. Stick with the mighty TD5! Instagram @defender_ventures

I jumped in my 110tdci (2015) today after driving back from Devon in the 90 300tdi yesterday. What the tdci lacks in character / charm it makes up for in comfort and noise levels - you get used to it quite quickly. Someone (Slideywindows?) recently compared a Series 2a to a 90 as an everyday driver- the general consensus was you soon get used to the creature comforts (all relative) in the 90 and limit the 2a to short hops. That is how we will see the 200tdi, 300tdi and TD5 in time. Remap a tdci and I doubt many folk would go back to an earlier engine. The TD5 is still a great sounding engine though, just ‘right’!

The TD5 engine note is just. 👌🏻

The Puma isn't bad though with the right system in! The factory exhaust system especially the centre box is restrictive imo. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I love my remapped TDCi, I also like my 200Tdi, but if I had a long journey or in a hurry, I take the Puma every time. Thumbs Up James

If I want comfort I take the D3 but I like driving the 90 more.

If you fit a Tdci box in Td5 are you also having to change the transfer box to the 1.22 from the 1.4?

I've driven a few now and really don't like them

They need a remap before they are anywhere close to nice to drive. First gear is far too short and you end up juggling gears constantly

Plus it sounds like a Transit, so when visiting friends they never know if it's you or Parcel Force coming down the road Laughing

Also it's worth considering the dashboard design. I'm 6ft 3 and feel it encroaches into the cabin too much compared to the older designs 2013 Discovery 4 HSE Lux | 2001 Defender 90 TD5 | 2007 Prodrive RB320

Those were the two things l picked up on, but it’s easy to get good examples of the TDCi where the newest TD5 versions are now twelve years old.
