Same here, also I've changed the gearing on my 90 and it now has the same final drive ratio as a puma (30mph / 1000rpm) so a little over 2000rpm on the motorway Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Why not put a disco transfer box in or a disco ratio in the transfer box? I did it to mine and it makes a world of difference.

I'm really happy with my 2.2. Goes well enough, the six speed box means it is refined (mine also has a LOT of sound proofing!) and the low first is easy to get used to and is also very handy!

Apart from the EGR cooler failing, the car has been reliable and I have driven 2000 miles in it in the last six weeks. The dash is fine for me at 6' and as a USW, the road tax is cheap. I get high 20s on a run which has been acceptable - and overall it's a pleasant experience to use.

Mine is currently for sale, but that's with regret! V8 90...WIP

What MPG do you get in town driving? I have heard that the TDCi struggles to better 20mpg where my TD5 110 will do 26mpg.

I don't really check it generally to be honest, I use it so little I forget. If I had to guess it would be low 20s. I know it drops to 19 when I load up and tow a caravan - but that is massively loaded and a big van.

I can tell you for sure the Td5 is more economical. V8 90...WIP

My 2.4 110, which always operates near GVW, has averaged 30.23 mpg over the last 200,000 miles.

200,000 miles? That’s good mileage. Seems the TDCi is good for over 100,000 after all!

Is the engine still good. Have you had to do much to it?

Currently just under 227,000. The only engine parts renewed are several VCVs, one water pump, one vacuum pump, 5 clutches, one radiator, one intercooler hose, and the heater valve.

Rad hoses, all sensors, serpentine belt, timing chain, injectors and seals, and output adaptor shaft are all original.

Makes them absolutely useless if you tow a trailer though in a Defender Neutral

When the time comes for it to need a rebuild, will you do it? or consider a conversion?

It is great to see high mileages are possible out of the Puma Thumbs Up Any advice, other than just regular servicing? Bow down James

I don't think 500k and upwards is anything new for the tansit engine.

MY2011 ie end of 2010 onwards is 'cheap' road tax / commercial on all of them ie my Nov 2010 110csw is commercial road tax.

granted I've not owned a pre-pumpa defender but for me the new dash was a game changer - granted the flaps are a nice idea but they're also another weak point in terms of maintenance and corrosion.

I rarely use 1st gear but clearly it's good to have it when required. With circa 450Nm at not too much above tickover and what seems like a virtually flat torq curve I'm not sure you could accuse it of being under powered. with >100k on the clock and >50k since the remap the engine is as sweet as a nut with no tells of it being anything other than just run in Thumbs Up

Probably, assuming that I have the time when it is needed. I don't plan a conversion because the 2.4 TDCi is a perfect engine for a Defender that is used properly as a Defender, rather than being used as an SUV. By far the most suitable engine yet fitted in a genuine multipurpose utility 4x4. I have a spare engine already in the rebuild pipeline, just in case.

I actually have to confess that my servicing is not as regular as it should be, and I am not a role model in that respect (do as I say, not as I do). I have on occasions gone well over the recommended oil change interval.

That being said, I have always maintained that it is better for a vehicle to be used regularly and a lot, and that the "one owner low mileage" vehicle which is used infrequently is likely to have more problems.
