"See Autocar's exclusive sketch of the new Defender"

exclusive sketch because in common with other publications, said to a designer "come up with an idea for the new defender" so this one is a mix between a disco 2, 3 and 4. It's just his idea, nothing to do with landrover.

Ideally if Mr Tata told the development team to keep the New Defender the same shape as the current one but to widen it or lengthen it if necessary and to use whatever engine and transmission setup -with no compromise from accountants--they thought necessary we probably would be looking forward to this new beast. However I do not think this will not be the case. The shape and form together with the power unit and transmission will be determined as to where Tata see the most sales. For the U.S. the structural strength will need to be improved to allow it to keep it's integrity during a roll over not to mention a myriad of airbags and pedestrian safety issues. Then there are the emission regulations. Europe will probably end up as strict as the U.S. To go for Africa or India a 1990's Defender with a tdi is probably the perfect job or some might see a series vehicle as the perfect answer to these countries. Maybe we will get a new ultra modern urban warrior vehicle for Europe and the U.S. with independent suspension whereas the lucky souls in Africa and India will get the more basic "tdi/series" vehicle with seperate chassis and beam axles hand built cheaply in India. We all regard the current vehicle as "iconic" but being "iconic" for it's own sake with limited sales, does not wash with businessmen or accountants. It will be a figures game in the end-which market will deliver the most sales. The safety laws and emission laws in these markets will determine the shape and capability of the New Defender. Think back to when the coil sprung 110 arrived. There were many who thought that coil springs were not the way to go and lamented the passing of the last of the "true"Land Rovers i.e. the series 111.Anyway we will be speculating for a few years yet and maybe ,as with the coil springs, we could be presently surprised. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
