Odd noise from front offside wheel (wooden batons clanging)
Have an odd noise coming from what I think is front offside wheel area, sounds like someone rattling two hard wooden batons together, seems to do it under load and freewheeling, its a bit of a guess as to the area exactly, as I have to stick my head out of the window to ascertain.......I mentioned it at the last service, but there was no comment or find. Anyone any ideas? It seems to disappear under braking.

Could well be the brake pads rattling. Usually an issue on 110 rear calipers. Check that you still have all the anti-rattle springs on the pad retaining pins.

If you have alloys you should be able to see/feel without taking the wheel off.

Hmmm ok there seem to be two pins about 4mm in diameter that are loose in that caliper, and there is movement on them, the sound could be that, but the seem small for the amount of noise created

It would be the pads rattling that causes noise rather than the pins. Are there no spings over the pins?

If not get hold of a pad fitting set and fit the new pins with springs

An easy test for this is to tap the brakes lightly and see if the noise stops. It takes the play out of them. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Yeh if I apply the brakes even slightly, the noise reduces or stops, is there a cure? Is it damaging to let it continue?

Might be worth taking a look at your drive flanges too and check them for wear.
Braking has an effect on load there as well an the DM's splines.

I found I had on the rear one flange one side slightly more worn than the other, so the front is possible too.
Worth checking anyway and that they are lubed and not dry. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

Everything you've said points to the pads rattling, something for which they're notorious. It won't do any harm, it's just very irritating!

Those anti rattle springs on the front seem to be very weak to me, how can they be effective is theyare that weak?
I know there is the other extreme which isn't any good at all but you can compress the springs as standard just by lightly touching it. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

So just had the front wheel off to look at those callipers .......those wheels are heavy, feck me.......

The springs had broken near one end about 1 and a half turns in, so I replaced them with new ones and new pins, but I really cant see them making that much difference, the weight of those pads and the strength of those springs seem like two factors that don't go together for me, the base end of each spring is nearly already slipping through the pin hole in the pads.......is there a better cure for this?

Update......fitting those new springs fixed the issue for about 5 mins, I guess the springs have now slipped through the pad pin holes again, and are serving Censored all purpose, I may as well have put blancmange in there Rolling with laughter
