Puma front pads and discs
Afternoon,

I've had a search on the forum and I'm struggling to fins an existing topic that gives guidance on the best way to approach changing the discs and pads on a 110 TDCI with ABS & TC.

I understand that theres an easy way and a hard way but I'm struggling to find the topic that I thought I had previously read on here.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Shouldn't be any different to a non ABS vehicle.... just push the pistons back into the caliper (I use a large pair of pipe grips when the old pad is still in the caliper)

Looking at the workshop manual it has the hub assembly removed first, which looks like a job in itself. I can see why you recommend bearings at the same time. Keith

The discs are bolted to the hub assembly and then the disc usually need 'persuading' off with a hammer. You'll need a multi point socket. 17 or 19, can't remember.

Take the opportunity to convert to the tdi wheel bearing kit too.

No need to change the bearings unless they’re worn, they basically last forever if not contaminated.

I changed my fronts 190,000 miles ago and the O/S ones are still going strong. N/S ones got mud in so had to be changed a while back.

A little more investigating in the manual and changing the discs looks really simple, as Greeni said just tap it off with a hammer.

However removing the hub assembly looks like the major piece of work Shocked .

Disconnecting the brakes, removing gasket and bolts to be "discarded".

Is there a kit of gaskets and bolts? Eurocarparts look pretty decent for new Brembo pads and discs but I'm struggling with finding baskets and bolt sizes.

Greeni - are you able to elaborate on what changing to the TDI wheel bearings improves? Keith

It's an easy job, all just nuts and bolts, rather than any real finesse required.

The "old" style wheel bearing setup has 2 nuts, so you can adjust them for wear, just takes a bit of time to set the correct preload. The new style has a spacer in the middle, and one nut that gets done up very tight.

Personally I stick with the new style, lots of people prefer the older style!

Also look at paddocks for parts, they'll also do the drive flange bolts and replacement paper gaskets.

If yours has ABS you'll also need to remove the ABS Reluctor ring from the hub in order to remove/replace the disc.

It is a press fit only, so will tap on/off with a hammer and drift ........ just make sure you refit it in it's exact position Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm going to have a look at Paddocks later for bolts and gaskets, just need to order the main bits before the eurocarparts sale code ends.

The service flagged the fronts as needing done so I'm prioritising those just now. Once I've got those done and have the axle stands etc then no doubt the rears will follow.

Be aware that the discs and pads (AP Lockheed and Ferodo/Mintex discs and pads) will probably be much better value from Paddocks at full price than ECP offerings even with 50% discount.

I have checked a number of times, especially on discs and pads.

2004 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Epsom Green
Its not that hard of a job.

Pull the ABS sensor from the top
Remove pads
Push pistons back in
Undo the king pin bolts (left snd right of the abs sensor) - jack up and support the entire disc/hub to stop oil leaking from the hub
Undo both 13mm bolts on the rear of the caliper - drop the steering bars for better access
Remove caliper - can be cable tied on the radius arm
Tighten kingpin bolts back up
Remove dust cap
Remove circlip
Remove drive flange x5 bolts
Remove stake nut - get a proper 52mm socket
Remove disc - careful not to drop or contaminate the outer bearing
5 bolts in the disc
Tap off with a hammer

Refit is the reverse. Helps to have a drift/rawhide/rubber mallet to fit a new disc

You need nee stake nuts to refit.

Replace the caliper bolts with new
Replace the disc to hub bolts with new
Replace the drive flange bolts with new

Make sure to torque everything up correctly.

New style for the bearings is "idiot proof" not perfect by some peoples standards but totally fine.

Clean the caliper snd new disc with brake cleaner.

Avoid Mintex pads never had a set that didnt squeak

Never had an issue with Mintex pads as long as they are fitted correctly and grease applied correctly. I have had two sets of Ferrodo pads delaminate and fall apart though. Am using Delphi pads this time and they are probably the best I have used. They also fit the calipers better.

I also wouldnt use EBC pads on anything
