Turbo Overboost
Hi,

I wondered if anybody could please, offer me some advice? I have checked my Turbo actuator arm and it is free and very loose across the entire range of its travel. (I have only checked when engine cold).

Would that mean I could/should rule it out as a cause of an (intermittent and very frustrating) Turbo Overboost P0234 fault code?

I have replaced MAF and MAP sensors along with turbocharger hoses. Is there anywhere else I can look before getting involved in the turbo? I cant spent that kind of money until I'm sure its the solution.

Would very much appreciate your thoughts.

It would certainly suggest to me that the problem is not the vanes in the turbo sticking (unless they only do it when hot, of course). I would be more inclined to look towards the actuator or wiring harness, or sensors.

How could I check either the actuator or the harness?

I don't think it could be the vanes sticking. it only happens occasionally, usually when I'm overtaking a massive truck with a black Audi behind me.

For the harness all you can really do is inspect it carefully, paying particular attention to the places where it touches the engine, mounting brackets, or anything else.

Yes, that's what I read elsewhere on this forum. The intercooler pipes I have renewed, to rule them out.

I will check the wiring harness to see if there is anything visually wrong. Thanks for the replies.

The problem I have here in Sweden. Particularly where I live, is Defenders are very rare. Which means specialists do not exist. A main dealer charges 200 pounds an hour for diagnostics. Its cheaper for me to replace the less costly items in the hope I get lucky. The downside is that it is a hit and miss process and may result in a new turbo......hopefully not though.

I don't know the Puma turbo's too well but I've seen plenty of overboost scenario on VAG engines and it is normally the vanes stick when you are on full throttle acceleration heading down a slip road or something.

The vanes go the full extent of travel and jam in that position momentarily.

I'm not suggesting or condoning this method but you get the idea. I think you can buy products designed for this job these days.
