if it's the cap you'll generally see some evidence of it leaking around the cap. On the genuine ones, if you look at the inside of the cap, you'll see a hole with a brass disc behind it, you can see reference cuts around the hole to give you virtual 'cross hairs', if the rivet in the centre of the cap is obviously off centre, the cap has had it.

If there are no external indications, then I would suggest the EGR cooler is leaking internally. It either gets sucked through the engine and burned or leaks into the exhaust and gets vaporised.

I agree with the small level drop. Mine has always dropped about 1cm from the mark and then stayed there. 2.2 90 XS
