Torque converter issue?
Hello all, I’m in the process of trying to fit a ZF auto to my 300tdi. All was going well until I went to mate the gearbox to the engine. The spigot on the TC is wider than the receiving end of the crank. There is however a copper insert sighing the crank. If this were to come out would it cause issues or should it remain??? Any advise will be appreciated. I’m also looking for a diff lock adaptor that connects the lever to the transfer box. It’s not the same as the manual one. Does anyone know where I can get this from? Here are a couple of pictures of the TC and crank Defender 90 softop (in bits)

The spigot bearing bush comes out.

Speak to David Ashcroft about the transfer-box linkage. I bought the whole auto conversion from him for my 300TDi and yes it did come with a different linkage for the HI / LO / Lock. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

Hi,
Generally speaking:
The input shaft on a manual transmission does not always go round when the engine is running. Therefore you need a bearing in the end of the crank with a manual transmission.
With an automatic transmission the torque converter always goes round at engine speed and is bolted to the flex plate on the back of the crank. Therefore you don't need a bearing.
I don't know specifically about your engine, but I just assumed all engines now have proper bearings, I haven't seen a bush in the back of the crank since the mid seventies era.
If you have a bronze bush then measure the inside diameter, if the nose/spigot on the converter don't fit then remove it.
Probably best to remeasure with the bush removed to see if the converter then fits nicely.
Do you know how to get the bush out?

I had the same with my conversion, I removed the Bush by collapsing it. Cheers

By diff lock linkage do you mean the housing adaptor it needs to mount the lever? If so it's a std or part. Cheers

Thanks guys, you have confirmed my thoughts. I will pop the copper/bronze piece out. The bit for the diff lock is the linkage that the lever piston is attached to that fits down onto the torque converter. Looks like a piece of Ali folded in half,
