Jack Russel advice needed
Hi,

We have large well natured male springer spaniel and are thinking of getting another dog. Am I mad in considering a Jack Russell bitch puppy? We have no experience of Jack Russell’s so any advice welcome.

Thanks - JustinP Now gone - 2012 2.2 110 DC XS

We have a male springer and a male jack Russell, they get on really well. My in laws have a jack bitch and we don't have any problems when they're together. Our dogs are loved and adored, but they have been taught from a young age, that I am "top dog". 2006 TD5110 station wagon

That’s encouraging to here, because everything I’ve read is trying to convince me to go for another bread. Now gone - 2012 2.2 110 DC XS

I guess there is an element of luck involved with dogs, but I am convinced that dog behaviour is massively influenced by how they are treated. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

A pup is yours to shape, but a JR can be an absolute delight. We had them when I was a kid and they were cracking, not a nasty bone in their body. No reason it wouldn’t get on with the springer. Enjoy!

Worth remembering that a new pup can put the nose of an older dog out of joint so you must ensure it does not become jealous by you paying attention to the newcomer. Steve.

Jacks have a hell of a lot of ‘ character ‘, they need discipline, but are just the most rewarding and entertaining of dogs. They are bright and energetic, they will try and rule the roost, especially a dominant female...!

We lost my best buddy 3 months ago, still miss her terribly as do many others, we have a new female pup and she is a chip off the old block! Our 10 year old jacks were a little wary, but 3 weeks in all is settling down..
You won’t regret a jack.

Had dogs all my life from being a kid through to being a grandad (a bit like my LR ownership history!)...always had border collies & about 8 years ago my youngest daughter brought a Jack Russell/Patterdale cross home & I declared 'thats not staying"!

Well, like everything else in my life (being surrounded by a mad Italian wife, two daughters, two granddaughters, a big female horse, a girl dog)...I lost!

But as with all things, fell mightily head over heels in love with the little ratter & when said daughter left home I refused to let the Ratley go...luckily I won that one!

The upshot, she comes everywhere with me, loves the Land Rover & I would never have anything else but a scruffy little ratter...they look in a mirror & see a lion, even though they're usually the size of a slipper!

Get one...you will never look back.

Excellent
Go for it. First few weeks will always be a bit of a challenge but everything will work out fine.
We await the pics with interest.

I have to confess that we now have a puppy, but decided on a Beagle. The Jack Russell experience is therefore postponed for 10 years or so. Thanks again for all your advice. Now gone - 2012 2.2 110 DC XS
