My New Defender!
At last it all looks pretty certain now that I will finally get my new Defender on the 27th of this month. I came across her two days ago at a dealers. She is a 2011 110 XS Station Wagon in Zermatt Silver on a 60 plate and has only done 106 miles (pre registered I think!) and is mint of course.

Am I a HAPPY CHAPPY! Very Happy

Thanks folks, no sleep last night, Defender on the brain Very Happy so put a list of things that need to be done when she arrives - ANYTHING I HAVE MISSED OUT?

Seal windows
Seal bulkhead leak points
Seal windscreen hinge capping's
Seal rivets inside of bodywork
Treat electric window motors - how?
Sort rear door handles to prevent window dropping
Anti-rust under car once nuts are checked
Paint rear cross-member, and tow bar with POR-15 and chassis black
Paint AC grill (Etch primer! dealer to sort!)
Paint wing mirror arm before gets rusty
Paint headlight rims " " "
Strengthen mudflap mountings
Check all grease nipples are presents and tight UJ's etc
Check all fixings are tight under bonnet especially oil feed to Turbo.
Re-map EGR
Sort out security
Check recalls have been done
Buy lots of cotton wool and a nice red carpet to put her on Laughing - shame she won't fit in the garage Big Cry but I am going to raise the roof by a few inches, it needs replacing and is only old plastic corrugated stuff! I pinched new garage doors from my neighbour when she had them replaced - perfectly good and will sort the height out for access.

I'm absolutely amazed at that list of things to do with a vehicle which has only 106 miles on the clock! Surely this shouldn't be necessary even with a vehicle that can be as problematic from new as a Defender?
Are they really so bad they're rusting from new?
Don't they put any under body rust protection on these days?
I bought a new Td5 Defender in 2003 and am sure it had a black coating of some kind underneath.
I'm still very much undecided about returning to LR for my next vehicle and this sort of post really does nothing for my confidence that to do so would be wise.
AlanH.

Excellent news Very Happy

Ours is at the dealer just waiting for paperwork from Land Rover. We are sitting on a ferry coming back from Denmark (Very rough night - so we didn't sleep either!).

We can't wait Thumbs Up

Hopefully since ours has no electric windows or carpet or A/C then we will have fewer jobs to sort out!! Really pleased that you got what you wanted.

ps- our Series has not progressed much since picking up the bonnet Big Cry

AlanH - there is nothing in my list you have to do I am just being pernickety as I will be taking her to my grave and want to preserve her as best I can. It is no big deal just slapping grease, paint or sealant on Wink Check out a Jap car Forum and the problems they have from new Sad

Nellie, sorry to hear about your overnight trip. I am still recovering from going out in a Force 6, 3 days ago. Not a big wind but my sea legs aren't that good - why have a boat then - don't ask, I am persevering!!

Good news Nellie is ready, can't wait to see the pics of her and of your expedition Thumbs Up

No my restoration hasn't progressed either Rolling Eyes

Congrats on getting one finally. You never know, most of what you list will probably not even be an issue...what sort of warranty comes with a pre-reg one? 2011 110 USW

TIG UP's got it. This is not a works vehicle to keep chopping in, it's more of an interest car which I will never sell. She will be treated like a classic. I have never spent more than 11K on an everyday car but this has cost me 28K Shocked and I had to sell my Jag to get her Sad BUT I only paid 17K for my Jag and sold her for 27K so although 28K is a frightening amount to spend on a car it has only really cost me 18K and to buy the only ever car I will ever own from new is definitely worth it - especially for a Defender! I have my Series two's for playing around in the mud and working hard, the Defender will still be with me in 20 -30 years time.

I was going to get a cheaper Tdi or Td5 but couldn't find anything decent and couldn't be bothered to start another rebuild and the Jag was never used and to make 10K from it was VERY tempting. The SAAB 96 Two Stroke I have just bought is better for the family as it has 4 seats so it makes sense AND despite niggles I really love the PUMA's.

Ensure the bottom of the doors have plenty of waxoil in there, first place rust starts.

If i had one from new, the first thing i would do is a proper coat of waxoil under, inbetween and inside out!
