Ignition switch broken
My TD5 ignition is broken but I'm not familiar with how it works so not sure what part (or both) I need to change. All of a sudden it wouldn't crank, I then noticed even in pos 2 it would slip out by itself, I managed to make a little loom to hotwire start it and everything works fine so wiring is good but I don't know if I need to change the mechanical bit the electrical bit or both (things may also be complicated by the fact I have an x-eng barrel lock)

Any help much appreciated

Hello drinkdrinkdrop

Here you go...

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56773....p;start=45

The X-Eng Barrel Lock will be an issue. I too have this fitted but in a non-standard form
(PM me if you want to know more).

Good Luck...simple cheap 'legacy' Lucas product...dubious quality, but there you are
LR never improved this...

Probably easier to fit on a TD5 with the non-puma shelf (as I remember it) but expect
a few hours to complete...+ your approach to the X-Eng... Exclamation

Good Luck... Thumbs Up SKIP

TD5 Ignition Switch seems loose
Hi guys,
2002 TD5 90
So I'm fiddling around behind the instrument panel and accidentally touch the white ignition switch which just just detaches itself from the metal body, far too easily imho. I pressed it back on (not exactly easy access) but it didn't have a satisfying click. I'm convinced it could pop off. How are these supposed to fix? Is there a bolt or are the grey metal flanges that I can see designed to be click flanges and must somehow be worn? Grateful for advice.

It's just a spade connector similar to the one in the foreground. Slide back the white plastic sheath and tweak it a little tighter with a pair of needle nose pliers (I appreciate that this is easier said than done given its' location). I'd also disconnect the battery as it'd be easy to short something out whilst fiddling with wires in a confined space. Darren

Cheers Darren,
Is the spade connector behind the white cap?
When the white cap popped off all I saw was what looked like a ring of flat copper contact points in a circle which looked like they must be the main ignition barrel contactors.
I didn't notice see a a spade connector. I saw the grey metal outer locator flanges, 3 I think.
Is the spade connector electrical or just a holding device.
Mind you I didn't dare pull the hole thing right off in case something dropped out.

Ah, I think I misunderstood your first description. It is a spade connector under the white cap but it sounds like the connector tab on the body of the switch has snapped off, which is a very different problem. It may be repairable with solder but more likely needs a new switch. Either way, it needs to come out.

It's fiddly but the switch can be removed from the end of the lock barrel and replaced without having to remove the barrel from the steering column. Darren
