Transfer case with centre ATB
I know a few have gone for Ashcroft's front and rear diff ATBs, who has a centre ATB with standard diffs? 1999 Defender TD5 110

In my experience it makes a big difference. More stability at all times, especially during heavy braking which surprised me. I didn't think about the positive effect of fitting it for slowing down but it does reduce the tendency for the back end to step out when braking at maximum effort.

It makes a big difference to traction out of sharper bends (such as off wet roundabouts). Before, you would get lots of front inner wheel spin causing understeer. Now, with power sent to the back, there is less overall wheel spin and understeer. This makes for a more stable cornering experience.

Off road difflock is required much less. I did a days offroading on Salisbury Plain in the thick wet mud. My defender is on 285 section road tyres and I didn't get stuck once. I think I may have engaged diff lock once. My defender doesn't have traction control but I'm sure with such a defender the difference off road would be even greater.

Once it is fitted, after a few hundred miles, you completely forget it's there. No extra noise or scrubbing on full lock. In fact I would say it reduces some backlash.

All in all a great upgrade. I'm sure with front and rear diffs the conversion would be formidable Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

For me the 110 is a daily drive and then at weekends, towing rally cars in forests which are often churned up or slippy after 160 or so cars have been through or race circuits (which have some wet grass which is boggy - don't ask me how I know Surprised )

Certainly food or ATB for thought. Currently out of stock at Aschroft's 1999 Defender TD5 110

I'll be honest in that I'm not sure.

It was suggested it would help with reducing slack in the transmission - in hindsight I'm not sure how but perhaps it does.

All I can say is that I've got no adverse comments to add and certainly it does drive lovely now. Would I buy another ...... yes in so much that I know it drives well without it and wouldn't want to be without it to wish I'd got it ie if I were having another transfer box rebuild.

Well.. 30 miles in after having the new TC fitted with the centre ATB.....There is certainly less backlash, not sure how much is due to the new TC or ATB, or a bit of both.

So far no rough stuff/wet roads but on road manners appear the same. I have a few forest events coming up soon so that will be a good test.

The change between a 1.2 ratio and 1.4 ratio is Smile power is back, a little louder but to be expected.

Anyone want to buy a 1.2 ratio box? See advert in for sale section 1999 Defender TD5 110
