Smoke in Cab After Braking - Handbrake Stuck
Last night I was heading down a steep hill when we had to stop suddenly for a deer. Glad it wasn't my TD5... Vehicle stoped well, no skidding but then an awful smell and a good amount of smoke up from the driver's floor/dash area. Smell continued for much of the 10-15min journey. On arrival I went to apply the handbrake but found it immovable.

I did notice on this 2013 XS Utility 2.2 that the handbrake felt very tight. On my TD5 to apply the handle had to be applied through the full range. On this one it was tight and a very small range of music.

I don't understand the relationship between heavy braking and handbrake?

Can a sage clarify?

I will of course go and see if the 17mm adjuster can be loosened.

What can happen is that the engine gearbox earth cable fails/isn’t refitted so the engine earths through the handbrake cable. Shorting it and doing what you described.

I know that doesn’t fit with all your points above, but would be my starting point.

Thanks Andy I will have a read about that. Can't quite understand why it happened so acutely at that particular moment of having to brake hard. I thought the ABS had died but I couldn't understand the connection to the handbrake. There I was buying a 'newer' one to avoid all the issues with the older one. Laughing

Andy thank you. Largely spot on. What had happened... ( Embarassed ) was that I changed the battery yesterday. Secured it to the battery tray but clearly, not well enough. Some very shoddy roads and then the sudden emergency downhill stop was enough force to send the battery forward from it's tray and it obviously earted against the front wall of the seatbox.

Now extra secure with optional lumps of 4 x 2 in situ.

Mercifully, after my pride, the only casualty is the handbrake cable/etc that has earthed. What do we reckon the extent of the damage is? Everything else electrical appears to be fine.

I had a similar issue in the past where I added a 2nd battery and pushed the original onto the battery box wall shorting out the break cable - no other electrical issues found but just my embarrassment explaining what had happened and why !!

So is it just a case of replace cable or will I find unpleasantness in the handbrake housing??

I just had a full cable replacement (inner and outer ) and its been fine ever since - the tech who did the job said that they see this from time to time and he had caused the same to happen on a vehicle he was working on ... Ive now insulated the battery box to prevent this happening again !

I think the only issue will be a new HB cable. But I’d be buying a LR one. Some a really poor quality. Also lube before you fit it Thumbs Up
