Replacing a decat
2.4 Puma - has a decat , I think the cat has been cut out and a pipe fitted in its place, leaving the bellows.

The bellows have been identified as the source of a very annoying vibration.

I’ve read how hard it is to remove the cat, with the sub frame and engine both needing to be moved.

However, would it be a much easier job to remove an already de-catted pipe to replace it like for like ?

Anyone else had failed bellows on their Exhaust down pipe? My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

Just take the good crewmember out, slacker engine mounting bolt and back engine to one side. It's not a difficult job just time consuming. You need to remove crewmember to physically get the can out. Cheers

But if there is no can, because it’s a decat, does it drop straight out, or do you still need to make the space? My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

You'll probably still need to remove the 'crewmember' unless the decat pipe is a 2-piece one, but shouldn't need to malarky about with the engine.

Curiously I don't remember having any trouble getting my cat out when the flange broke off, nor do I remember undoing any engine mounts.

I think the 2.2 with a DPF is much more difficult to remove and needs engines lifting and all sorts, but the 2.4 with just a cat is much easier.

Interesting- thanks.

Has anyone used the allysports decat pipe with the “cosmetic cat can” for new MOt requirements? My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

you will still need to take the gbox xmember out as it wont drop far enough to get the bend out unless there is a flexible section in the aftermarket bit.

engine wont need touching.

i did do one without touching the engine mounts side of things but its easier to them. Cheers

In the 2.4 Puma it can be done. It's easier if there's two of you, one above in the engine compartment and one below. It's like doing those nail puzzles you get in crackers at Christmas - there's only one way to do it but working it out can be a b****r, especially if you're the one underneath putting it back.
