Been over to YRM and picked up a set of body panel stays and fixings. (Only 70 mile round trip on the bike 🏍)
First time I’ve been there; I found them a friendly and accommodating outfit.
Will be fitting them later as I don’t have time at the moment.
Will let you know how I get on, probably last week in June đź‘Ť

Well it’s now the last week in July and June has gone.
I visited YRM and picked up some aluminium body stays complete with bolts (nice folk).
I removed the old stays and chucked them into the bin.
Both body panels were found to be pitted so I drilled out the scabby bits to good metal.
I got two 18g aluminium angles bent up which I primed and painted.
The angles were 30x30x75 long.
I cleaned the inner faces of the body panel and fitted the angles to ensure I could mark the body stay bolt position
I drilled a 6mm hole in each. ( Both body holes were enlarged due to the corrosion in the aluminium)
The angles were then bolted in place using the stay/body bolts before I drilled 3 x 3mm holes through both body panel and new angles and riveted them in place with a coating of anti corrosion compound on the rivets.
On the internal faces I applied a liberal coating of waxoyl.
The small body holes were filled, pressing the filler in the hole and onto the face of the new angles on the inside of the panel and sanded down with wet and dry used wet.
Now I just need to repaint but as the body panels have minor branch scrapes I may get the two rear panels done properly as I don’t think I’ll get a good match for the metallic silver paint.
Definitely one to watch for as steel on aluminium with the potential to rub against each other isn’t good and the steel will win in the end.
If anyone does get new aluminium stays the new bolt kit supplied has two square shouldered bolts that go through the tub so you’ll have to square the holes off. I used a dremel. The square shoulders bolts mean you can bolt from the underside without help from anyone else.
