Scotland 2011 Defender 110 2.5 TD PU Stornoway Grey
Advice on running a set of live wires for pick-up Aux bed.
As title says I want to run a new set of wires direct from the battery to two points, firstly to an all weather 12v Aux. socket in the rear pick-up bed area of my 110 DCPU, I also want to install a 12v Aux and USB combo socket in the rear seats area of the truck (bought from Flatdog).

I tried and could not find the elusive live purple wire, so my thoughts are as follows and would appreciate someone who knows what they are doing confirming what i propose is safe!

1. solder 40amp battery connectors onto 44amp wires, and install an inline fuse close to the battery area.
2. Fit a 20amp fuse in the inline fuse.
3. Run the 44 amp wires to the rear seat area where I will fit the USB/Aux. outlet from Flatdog.
4. Run 44 amp wires from the Flatdog outlet to the rear pick-up bed area (where the plastic blanks are for the speakers) and install the all weather 12v socket.
5. Install a second inline 20amp fuse close to the external Aux. socket for addtional safety?

As you can tell i am no auto electrician!! Does the above seem a sensible and safe option, or should I consider an alternative way of doing things?? I assume I am better soldering the connections than simply crimping them??

If you have dual or 13pin towing electrics, you can pick up a battery supply from the towing harness for the rear.

For the rear seats you can just pick up a battery live from the fuse box under the drivers seat, or direct from the battery on the passenger side. Run the cable under the carpet if you want it behind the rear seats or you could just fit the surface mount sockets on either side of the cubby box.

I do have a towing electrics installed, I didn't even consider that!! I will check out how best to do that for the rear all weather one. Should I still install a fuse near to the external socket??
Again that is a good idea thanks for the fuse box suggestion! I guess I was overthinking things and missing the obvious Smile

it wouldn't hurt to separately fuse the socket.

Duraseal butt crimp connectors are best for splicing.

It is best to install the fuse as close as possible to the battery. If the fuse blows, then the lead from fuse to socket will not be live. If the the fuse is near the socket, the whole wire from battery to fuse near the socket is still live if it blows... Cheers, Vincent

Thanks mate, much appreciated, so these type of connectors are fine and do not need soldering then? Thumbs Up

Is 25amp cable enough then to do what I am after rather than going for 42amp?
