New to me TD5, but seems down on power.
Hi Guys,

We’ve just acquired this 90 TD5, it’s been used for some proper off roading in its life, but we bought it to work at our off road experience centre.

It’s not perfect, needs some work, Rhe simple jobs we can do, and have done some of them already like a simple service Including all oils and filters.

However here’s the issue, it seems way down on power, and we need to work out what the issues are.

Now here’s the challenge, the previous owner, had no knowledge or experience of the mods done to the car.

The car is fitted with a remote ecu loom.

It’s also fitted with a dastek ecu mod, that piggy backs with the remote ecu and loom.

As with all 2001 vintage TD5 engined defenders, it suffers with the oil in the loom issue.

We have cleaned our all plugs , and this has got rid of some of the misfires.

However it still hesitating on pulling away, and has a mid range misfire too.

We will lool at tests the maf and other sensors, but they all look clean.

However it’s also fitted with a electronic “ diesel dump valve “ which is in the intercooler pipe, and I suspect the cause of a lot of problems too.

Should we just get rid of it?. I don’t see the advantage of it at all?

We will also check the waste gate activation, but what else should we be checking?.

First things first, put a quality new MAF sensor on it. Then go from there.

Get rid if the piggy back and get it mapped properly.

Get rid of the diesel dump valve for whatever ridiculous reason its in there for.

New Genuine MAF Sensor - Gen LR - Siemens or VDO only. The rest are pants

Clean the MAP Sensor - On the inlet manifold

Check the air filter isnt blocked

Thanks for the welcome, have been active in the discovery 4 and and fullfat Range Rover forums, but been a whilst since we have had a defender like this to play with!

Yep that’s ar first thought too!

I think a new Genuine Maf will be the first purchase of course..

We have done a full Genuine filter and oils replacement already, so fuel filter, both oil filters, and of course air filter too..

Quick question of the diesel dump Valve if I may experts?

As it seems to be piggy backed with the Genuine Land Rover air control valve, what should the standard pipe routing look like?

Anyone point me to the std layout please?

Also as the valve, ( I assume it’s a BOF type) is in the intercooler pipe, will disconnecting it suffice, or do I need to buy a new pipe too?

If a new pipe is in order, shal,we just get a complete new set of silicone hoses for the intercooler and turbo?

The reason I ask, is I’m sure I can hear hissing, hence air leaks form some where?

Check the boost pressure of the turbo. Too high will cause problems as will it being low 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Right guys, quick update from this mornings playing with bits.

I disconnected the MAF and it has made no difference whatsoever, no increase in performance, but no decrease either.

Checked the power feed and ground on the MAF cable, all good.

Checked the ecu return voltage with the plug reconnected to the MAF, only a few milivolts reading.

So I think that looks like the maf is shot so will get a replacement one ordered.

Also tried plugging turbo valve pipes, at tbothr valve in the intercooler pipe, and the control block too.

That has now stopped the stupid hissing and boy racer Valve noise, so I think we can agree that’s got have not helped, so I will replace the intercooler hose and get rid of the value and controller all together.

Right, another update now after some further investigation and fettling!

It turns out we were down on boost pressure as that stupid turbo dump valve was letting all the pressure out at the point where it was Inserted in to the pipe.

So a new intercooler pipe, and removal of the control valve and the car feels like it has twice the power.

A quick test of fault codes using Auto Logic Diags revealed loads of air flow sensor faults.

So fitted and brand new Genuine Land Rover MAF, and now the engine pulls cleanly even from very low revs.

All in all a massive improvement.

There is still the occasional hiccup when I’m in 5th at about 60 mph, on a constant throttle, there is a blip and it feels like the revs increase on their own for a short burst.

We still feel like the dastek power box is not helping,,and think it might also be over fuelling the engine.

Next thing to try is to remove that all together and just run with the std rover ecu, to see how iit performs then.w
