Roamerdrive question - transfer box filler plug spanner size
May seem a silly question but

I've got a Roamerdrive fitted to my Defender TD5 When you install one, the Xfer box filler plug is replaced with a bigger brass one with a small torx screw in the middle of it. Getting it out to change the oil is a bit problematic due to the fact that the handbrake cable runs over the top of it.

I can just get an adjustable spanner over it but bit twitchy about rounding it off. Can anyone with a DS RoamerDrive tell me size of spanner to use?

Must have done it before but think those brain cells must have died

FWIW I just use an adjustable wrench like you do. If it is so tight that you are worried about stripping the brass bolt head, something else is wrong with the threads. 👍. Parts list says its just a 3/4 npt. No bolt size ☹️

A 3/4" NPT hex plug will be 1.1/16" across flats if it conforms to standards.

Remember the filler plug is on the overdrive unit itself (8mm Allen key if I remember rightly) the torx in the original filler bung location is now a level bung.

You fill into the roamer drive till the fluid comes ouf of the small hole in the top plug. Run for 1km and check oil level again.

Thanks everyone for replying

1). 28mm spanner fits the new filler plug
2). Only concern was the amount of effort I had to use to undo it, must have been a gorilla with a 5 ft breaker bar that tightened it up .Fairly certain took out some threads in the process, but its back in again and nothing leaking
3). Yup, that tiny drain screw in the roamerdrive does leak a lot of oil if its not tightened up enough. Problem is that the torx screwdrivers I've got are the kind that have a small plastic handle with a long shaft and you can tighten thigs up to a certain extend after which it just flexes. Got some that fit onto a socket set ratchet, I'll nip it up a wee bit

The fun part was removing the filler plug thinking that nothing would come out ... wrong. Don't think conditioning your hair with used GL-4 oil is to be recommended Sad

Next problem is getting the sump drain plug to seal. Again the saem gorilla must have been there as I had to use a 4 ft breaker bar and a bit of pipe to undo it.. New washer and correct torque setting doesn't stop it dripping ... neither does uping torque to ~40nm

Do I just nip it up gradually till it stops?

Someone suggested that overtightening it might have damaged te sump face the plug screws into. Santa - 1977 Series 3 - new chassis, tub, disc brakes,SU Carb

I thought they was taper plugs like the Land Rover filler plugs, Generally just 'nipped' up, if they are over tightened they can open the hold up and go through into the casing.

I would try some PTFE tape and hope for the best.
