Find someone who's got a ferret. Stick it in the attic, squirrel leaves rather quick or ferret gets extra food

If its a grey squirrel buy or borrow an air rifle and shoot it.

It is a grey. The sort of folk round here with air rifles are not the sort you encourage to visit you house!

You may have 2 squirrels but unlikely to be anymore.

I've checked the fridge, am all out of ferret poo! Being a soft liberal metrosexual I would prefer for the squirrel not to die, at least until I have had a good at persuading him/her out. However, if waiting til it's out and blocking the hike doesn't work, I might have to revisit my stance on that. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Respect to you if you can shoot a grey squirrel with an air rifle. Three of us tried with both barrels of a twelve bore (the squirrel was up a tree in the woods, not adjacent to someones property). A bit of greenery fell around us and the squirrel ran off! Still, I shoot for Greenpeace so unless the quarry is suicidal, most things have no fear from my gun. |

If you go down the trap route just be aware that you cannot release it and it must be dispatched humanely
The grey squirrel is regarded as an invasive non-native species following its inclusion under Schedule 9 of the WCA. Grey squirrels are also listed in the IUCN international list of 100 worst invasive non-native species. This highlights the damage that grey squirrels cause to our native flora and fauna; a problem severe enough to be recognised at a level of global significance. As such, the grey squirrel is regarded as a pest species and is afforded no protection under the WCA. Under Schedule 9 of the WCA, it is illegal to release a grey squirrel into the wild, or allow one to escape |

I can appreciate you don't want to kill it but like rats and mice they are vermin. As long as you despatch it quickly and humanely then your conscience should be clear.

i would encourage it out by making as much noise as possible in the area as close as you can get to the drey, someone outside can confirm its exit then seal off the PoE but be mindful that it will return and want to try to dig out its now blocked entrance or look for another entrance.
likely to be two of them unles there are young in there too. i would have a look at likely approach runs the squirrel uses and make an effort to block them too - cut back limbs on nearby trees, cut back vines/creepers if they are using them to gain access up the side of the house. i guess it gaining entry on a bit of broken sofit? on the subject of shooting them with an air rifle this is the most effective means of control after poking the dreys out in my experience Cheers

Theres some mortar fallen out of the end of the ridge tiles on the roof, which is where it is getting in. If I can be certain it/they are out I can climb up and chuck some fresh mortar in the hole. Can probably use some wire mesh to keep it out til the mortar sets. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Put barbed wire in the hole before sealing with mortar as well. It will almost certainly try its best to dig its way back in at the same place. You really must trap and kill it to prevent further damage to your property - they will chew through anything including water pipes and electric cables.
