turbo wastegate hose - £75 plus...!
Hi guys,

I'm at the point where I'm having a good look at tuning options for my 300tdi.

I don't want speed, I just want more torque when towing. I regularly tow a boat weighing something a little more than a ton. Nowadays, I have to drop right down the gears on steep hills. I think I was in 2nd on the way home last weekend. It's very hard to remember precisely what I had to do 10 odd years ago, but I'm pretty sure I didn't have to do that.

So, I'm researching turbos, intercoolers, fuelling etc, but I think, before I start adding on any bits, that it would be good to have a baseline to work from - particularly knowing what the turbo is doing.

I've seen VDO gauges recommended. Fine, and I've also looked into where to fit it. I was planning to use the pipe to the wastegate actuator. I thought it would be a cunning plan to have a new hose available in case of any cutting 'cock ups', and to bring things back to standard afterwards.

Long-winded way of getting to the point. As far as I can see the part number is STC4617. Prices vary, but the cheapest I could find was £75 plus vat. It's only 12cm long! That's more than £6 for a cm of hose... It must be some high-spec hose to be that expensive.

What's the story with this, and are there any alternatives available?

Try fitting a length of fuel pipe cheap as chips. That is what I once did and the fuel pipe is a perfect fit diameter wise. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Thank you - I probably have some of that in the garage, whether for the car or boat. I'll use that for a 'no risk' boost gauge installation, which I plan to be pretty temporary anyway at this stage.

As someone more used to the 230 bar pressures involved in filling dive tanks I am genuinely interested though in why the proper part is so expensive - a wee bit of pipe, specified to handle 1.5bar max.

I know there doesn't necessarily have to be a rhyme or reason to it, I remember doing the bulk-head swap, I'd go to the dealer parts desk and be told that 'x' little plastic thing was £10 or £12 - but approaching £100 for a 12 cm hose just has me staggered. Donald
